Grassley: IRS to pay $70M in employee bonuses despite spending cuts [ Sequester Bonus time! ]

The IRS is set to pay roughly $70 million in employee-union bonuses, contrary to an Obama administration directive to halt such rewards amid the deep, government-wide budget cuts known as sequestration.

The apparent deal with the National Treasury Employees Union is scheduled for Wednesday and was made public by Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

Grassley's office said the information came from a "person with knowledge of IRS budgetary procedures."

The IRS is already facing widespread criticism, which started last month when IRS officials acknowledged that agents had improperly targeted Tea Party groups and conservative organizations for additional scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections. Then the agency's inspector general issued a report a few weeks later that documented lavish employee conferences during the same time period.

This is why normal Americans always said for years that it was not a good idea to turn public servants into a bunch of union thugs. Unfortunately, we didn’t listen.

The IRS is shutting down their telephone answering and their practitioner on-line e-services one day every few months, and the recorded message blames the sequester.

If the politicization of the IRS, due to the unionization of the federal work force concerns you, just wait until Obamacare takes over and unionizes the whole healthcare industry.

A public employee union definition of “shared sacrifice” is only getting 70 million in bonuses when they had asked for 100 million. And taxpayers just aren’t grateful.

The DNC handles corruption two ways.

Murder or bribes.

Thousands of criminal illegals were released onto America’s streets, ostensibly because the money to continue incarcerating them isn’t there.

Yet, the IRS gobbles up $70 million for bonuses, and Obama takes a $100 million vacation.

And not even so much as a bleat of the faintest of protest from the sheeple.

Doesn’t the Occupy crowd go off on a rampage when CEOs get bonuses when the worker-bees are getting pink slipped? Guess it’s OK when IRS leadership does it.

I wonder what he means by “bonuses.” I worked for local government, and there was no such thing as “bonuses.” You were paid a salary, had pretty good benefits, and that was it. We were not allowed to accept gifts of any kind from vendors or other contractors, nor were bonuses allowed except - in rare cases - for winning a competition for providing the best cost-cutting or efficiency recommendation. Purely discretionary bonuses were not allowed. Some people amassed a lot of overtime, but that is not a “bonus.” “Bonuses” are largely a creature of the private sector, where they are awarded for high performance, high sales, innovation, etc.

What were the metrics used to determine an employees bonus amount? I’d love to see that. I think it should be public information. It’s perverse to give bonuses to people in an agency that has been systemically abusive, rewarding bad behavior during sequestration is even worse. I want to know if they also get a bigger bonus respective to the amount of extra cash received from audits. This would create a conflict of interest and should not be practiced.

I don’t even understand the need for IRS bonuses. They have good jobs and produce nothing. A bonus is just theft from the US taxpayer. It is not the same thing as a bonus in private industry. It’s as though they’re in a union or something...oh wait!

What an abomination, public employees in a union, which of course has a political voice....using our tax dollars as well.

I don’t remember when I entered the Matrix...but I must have at some point, this is insanity.

Why the heck is ANY federal employee paid a cash bonus? All bonuses for federal employees should be outlawed.

The bonus gimmick in the federal government actually REDUCES anticipated retirement costs. The bonus does not get added into the high-3 years, nor does it get the thirft savings matching funds if you sock it away in your thrift savings account.

Presumably the goobers in the government are satisfied with this arrangement ~ of course there's nothing they can do about it anyway. But, it gives the politicians a hook on the bureaucracy. If you step out of line they'll talk about your bonus!
