Woman killed by runaway shopping cart

A grandmother was killed when an overloaded runaway shopping cart went barreling down an escalator and struck her, sending her crashing into a post.

The death, caught on closed-circuit TV, shows the 60-year-old woman near the bottom of the flat escalator in Shanghai, China, when she is hit from behind by the speeding shopping cart, loaded with 15 cases of drinks and weighing 150 kilograms, The Strait Times reported.

The unsuspecting woman was sent flying about seven metres before striking a post.

The June 21 accident took place at the Lianhua Supermarket in the Jiading district after two men lost their grip on the shopping cart, which was their own and did not belong to the store, according to the Strait Times.

The two men can be seen running down the escalator chasing their grocery cart moments after the woman is hit.

Police are investigating.

In south korea the carts lock into the escalator type belt on those ramps. So this can’t happen. China probably forgot to copy that part.

Carts on the escalator! Words fail.
RIP.
During my time in China I saw ,at a rough guess, two or three deaths a WEEK caused by advanced stupidity.
This was mid-ninetys just as things where changing ,supposedly.

Same kind of locking wheels in Germany. I’m often surprised how the cart won’t move once you get onto an escalator.

"Carts on the escalator! Words fail."

Likely long escalating ramps (like conveyor belts) actually designed for carts. They are supposed to be made so that the wheels of the cart catch in the matting of the belt/ramp, preventing the carts from rolling on the incline until the end of the belt/ramp is reached.

We've been in a hundred such large stores in Shanghai, including many, many locations of that Lianhua chain mentioned.

Sometimes, it just doesn't work that way.

The Menards (like a Home Depot or Lowes) store in Eden Prairie, Minnesota has this. There’s a magnetic lock, the wheels won’t turn. Pretty cool, actually.

It looks like the problem was that the wrong kind of cart was being used, the one in the video was one of those heavy duty, almost industrial, type flat bed carts, not a shopping cart.

Hmm interesting info, Thanks.
It would appear that in this case the resourcefulness of the idiot had not been taken into account.
The cart they where using didn’t belong to the shop, hence no safety features.

Cheers.
