More than three years after he died in prison, whistle-blowing Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was found guilty of tax evasion by a Moscow court Wednesday.

The posthumous trial of Magnitsky was a macabre chapter in a case that ignited a high-emotion dispute between Russia and Washington that has included U.S. sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators, a ban on the adoption of Russian children by U.S. citizens and calls for the closure of Russian non-governmental organizations receiving American funding.

Magnitsky was a lawyer for U.S.-born British investor William Browder when he alleged in 2008 that organized criminals colluded with corrupt Interior Ministry officials to claim a fraudulent $230 million tax rebate after illegally seizing subsidiaries of Browder’s Hermitage Capital investment company. He subsequently was arrested on tax evasion charges and died in prison in November 2009 of untreated pancreatitis at age 37. His death prompted widespread criticism from human rights activists and the presidential human rights council found in 2011 that he had been beaten and deliberately denied medical treatment.

Announcing his verdict Thursday, Judge Igor Alisov said “Magnitsky masterminded a massive tax evasion scheme in a … conspiracy with a group of people,” according to the ITAR-Tass news agency. …

The USA should absolutely emulate this kind of behavior. After all, trying the dead is an example of “conservative” jurisprudence . . .

We do already. One way to get audited is to die. It’s their last chance at your money, and you’re not there to defend yourself.

A truism worthy of note;....

"Do not fear the enemy,
for they can take only your life.
Fear the media,
for they will destroy your honor."

That’s not so bad. Boston/Massachusetts is spending millions of dollars to dig up the Boston Strangler, who confessed to the murders, so they can run DNA tests on his to prove that he really killed them. I would say they are uniquely SOS (stuck on stupid) but Conn & NY are too like minded.

Why don’t they mention that Browder was a Soros’s associate? There are strong rumors that Browder’s enterprise was tied to Bernard Madoff as well and the whole idea was about stealing billions from Russian government via phony tax returns.
A timeline between busting the scheme by Russian authorities and Madoff’s insolvency adds credibility to these rumors.

All of these people including deceased one really couldn’t do it without any “help” from some corrupt Russian officials but it doesn’t make themselves any innocent. The problem is they’ve chosen a line of defence poorly. Being busted themselves, they’ve started their whistleblowing, accusing their unfortunate “helpers” in government as if a theft was their idea. It was a serious underestimation of a Russian bureaucracy who didn’t want any publicity like that. Once again, it doesn’t make Browder and Magnitsky any innocent.

As for Magnitsky’s death he seems to be a long time alcoholic, he has developed undiagnosed pancreatitis and numerous alcohol related issues before being imprisoned and certainly could die anyway if he was to continue his lifestyle ignoring doctors. He was actually first diagnosed in prison and died shortly after.

Why there is so much interest about Magnitsky? Hundreds of people dies in prison in Russia, US and elsewhere. There are other examples of aloeged mistreating American businesses in Russia, US and elsewhere. Why Hermitage Capital, Browder and Magnitsky are more equal than other animals?

They aren’t giving DeSalvo a posthumous trial, no matter how silly the current events with respect to the case are.
