Owner Of Burned Out Cabin In Dorner Manhunt Files $420K Claim Against San Bernardino Co.

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — The owner of a Barton Flats cabin has filed a claim against San Bernardino County saying sheriff’s deputies allowed it to burn during a standoff with rouge former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner.

Candice Martin is seeking $420,000, alleging deputies made no effort to save her cabin in the 40000 block of Seven Oaks Road on February 13.

Following a 10-day manhunt, Dorner barricaded himself inside the structure, shooting two deputies, killing Detective Jeremiah MacKay and seriously injuring Deputy Alex Collins.

The vacation rental caught fire after authorities fired tear gas inside.

Martin, of Palmdale, said deputies did nothing to put out the fire which ultimately destroyed the cabin. Dorner’s body was recovered from inside the structure, however, it was unclear if he died in the blaze or if he committed suicide.

The county has 45 days to respond to the claim, and if rejected, a lawsuit can be filed.

I think the County may be immune from any damages based on them not putting the fire out.

For starting the fire however.....

Wasn't there a radio transmission of cops saying something like "light her up?"

Intentional or not, the tear gas is what caused the fire.

I would think that somebody has coverage for the damage. If they owner has insurance then the insurance carrier should pay and restore then subbrogate it to the County.

I think both can sue. The defendant has to make sure it doesn’t pay twice.

rouge, eh? I knew he had mental issues, but I hadn’t heard he was a cross-dresser.

Well, it IS L.A. maybe men wearing rouge is de rigueur.

Hard to believe they haven’t made much improvement on gas delivery since Waco.

I agree with you. Seems like the amount is such that the county should pay, not drag it out at much greater expense.

I think you can get an outhouse for a quarter of a mil out there... that’s about it. Half a mil for a shack sounds about right.

Maybe the draft was in cursive — and the editor couldn’t quite make out the spelling.

The cops reported his cheeks were flush as the fire started.

When have we heard of government firing tear gas and starting a fire...hmmm!

A little human bar-b-que in Texas seems to come to mind.

You beat me to that “rouge” gaffe-I was going to ask the same thing...

A news source that doesn’t look up the spelling/meaning of the word they want to use-I assume they meant “rogue”, but it is California...

“I think you can get an outhouse for a quarter of a mil out there...”

Well I can tell you that our 1940 1400 sf cottage in Carmel is appraised for $1.5 million! Of that amount, the land is worth $1 million. The original owner had it built ( including the land) for $4k.
