Mayors misled: Gun group needs a new name - Mayors Against Illegal Guns suffers from its overreach.

Nashua Mayor Donalee Lozeau quit New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns after it exposed its true mission: to pursue strict new gun-control laws. She has had plenty of company. A review of the group’s membership by news and entertainment website Buzzfeed.com found that it has lost more than 50 members who have quit, lost re-election or had their terms expire.

Lozeau quit after she saw the group’s first ad attacking U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte for voting against a gun-control bill. “I said, ‘Wait a minute, I don’t want to be part of something like that,’” she told this newspaper last month. “I told them, ‘You’re mayors against illegal guns, you’re not Mayors for Gun Control.”

Ah, but they are Mayors for Gun Control. The organization’s misleading name was a ruse to boost membership. As Lozeau said, “Nowhere within the literature of this group was there any indication that there would be campaigns against members of Congress, particularly around issues that were not related to illegal guns.”

Others also felt misled.

“The original focus, I thought, was going to be on focusing on better enforcement of our existing laws, and if anything, we have talked about not getting involved with things like banning assault weapons and banning magazine clips,” Rockford, Ill., Mayor Lawrence Morrissey, told Buzzfeed. Morrissey quit the group last month.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns says its membership is growing. Either way, it should be honest about its mission and change its name to Liberal Mayors Against The Second Amendment.

Weakened arsenal: More than 50 original mayors have quit Bloomberg's anti-gun group

IMHO, Ayotte still gets primaried for being pro-amnesty for illegal aliens, regardless of Ayotte's pro Second Amendment votes. We shall see.

A new name? That’s easy - simply remove the word ‘illegal’ from their current name - “Mayors Against Guns”.

In my mind, I’m already there...

I wonder....

Could it be that their cause is waning and suddenly they see they are on the losing side of an issue that could affect their political careers? Now they were duped and switching sides?

I have my doubts.

What was so hard to figure out? The founder of the organization is rabidly pro gun control. You don’t have to be a genius to figure it out.

You can guarantee that the new name for the group will be as far from gun control as they can get, but they will retain the original goal - more gun control.

Very insightful question. Like you, I would guess the former. Sad to say, but they are politicans first; doing the right thing always seems to come second.

Sure. Mike Bloomberg, anti-gun? Who knew?

It's nothing that nailing a few mayors' hides to the barn won't cure. They chose...poorly...

Is there a “stupid” clause that the citizens of a city can use to toss out their Mayor? Approximately *what* did this idiot think a Bloomberg group about guns was about?

Yup, she's lost my vote. I will not support a pro-amnesty politician, period.

No matter what they call it, by not applying the existing penalty to illegals (deportation) it is, by definition, amnesty. I will have no part in that.
