Plastic bag ban leads to nationwide increase in shoplifting rates
The Daily Caller ^ | 07/24/2013 | Unattributed

On Friday, New Jersey Democratic operative James Devine was arrested for attempting to snatch $22 worth of merchandise from a local ShopRite pharmacy. Devine tried to smuggle lettuce, shampoo and protein powder out of the store, perhaps trying to hide the fact that he was about to make the world’s most disgusting salad. To avoid detection, he stashed the goods in a reusable grocery bag.

What seems to be just another edition of Democrats doing dumb deeds actually represents a nationwide problem. Thanks to laws in several major cities banning the use of plastic carryout bags in retail stores, there has been a spike in shoplifting incidents over the past couple years, a trend that business owners, law enforcement officials and customers have duly noted.

In 2011, Washington D.C. enforced a reusable bag tax and officials became steadily more suspicious of shoppers’ activities.

lol. I am sure the grocery stores are making big bucks using those self use check outs. I literally saw a lady put the big bag of tomatoes and put in buns as the item. I was waiting for her to finish which is why I saw her...when she looked up and saw me, she said, “Oh I made a mistake” and called the helper.....Yeah sure lady!!!!!!

They instituted a plastic bag ban in my town. To get the grocery stores to go along, they added a 5 cent fee for brown paper bags, ostensibly to encourage people to buy re-usable bags. The stores figured they’d make $300k per year with that fee. I wonder if it’s enough to off-set the shoplifting.

On the bright side, they are getting the increased shoplifting exactly in the places dumb enough to enact these laws.

Next step will be to replace them with high margin Asian-owned convenience stores. Owners which, by the way, will be armed and ready.

Ya gotta know this is all coming about because of those asinine "self-esteem" classes they force the young "skulls full o mush" to be indoctrinated with in public school.

They grow up to be legislative staff, who then run for an office of their own (even though they're truly ignorant of human nature) and pass these totally idiotic mandates on all the citizen/taxpayers who just want to be left the hell alone!!!

Love your scream name!!!

This is happening in Austin since they enacted the reusable bag ban. I am thinking along another line. What would stop a terrorist from packing a bomb into a bag and stuff a few more bags on top. Leave the bomb in a cart and go outside to detonate it with the shoppers inside.

Lettuce .. hmm, well at least they’re getting a “good” dose of nicotine.

But wait, the pharmacy... oh that place that sells 300,000% mark-up refined and distilled tar

Almost makes sense now

Of course, no shoplifting ever happens because of unemployment after benefits run out, general poverty, employees being cut back to 28 hours a week, etc.

Do you know what I did? I bought some Piggly Wiggly reusable bags. They are of higher quality than other reusable bags, and I don’t have to worry with throwing out the plastic bags.

The irony is that I put all of my produce and meats in plastic bags, cutting the bacteria that might infect them. Those bags are much easier to throw away.

2 days ago ... HELENA — St. Helena could become the latest city to ban plastic bags. The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday that staff should draft an ...

Same nit wits had a nuclear ban decades ago.

In their zeal to kill new businesses to protect the good old boys/gals, Yountville is cleaning their clock re upscale restaurants, inns and resorts. On Friday/Saturday nights and brunch Sunday, there is a lot of traffic south bound to Yountville, and St Helena with the exception of a couple of excellent restaurants is looking like a ghost town.

Ah yes! I recently dined in one of those neat places in Yountville. Back in 1964, when I first arrived in CA, I inbibed at the El Real in Rutherford, not too far from both St. Helena and Yountville. It burned down later in the 60's. I'll never forget going there with my two brothers in law because the three of us hadn't done too much drinking and we were already higher than kites from winning a bowling tournament at the alley in St. Helena.

LBJ was gettin ready to blow Barry Goldwater away with the ad they never really ran about the lil girl pickin petals offa that posey when the mushroom cloud boiled up right behind her.

One of my BIL's was nuts about Goldwater and got louder and louder about being for him the more he drank. He'd then yell "set 'em up bartender!" after each vituprous pitch he made to everyone in the place, even though no one gave a dang about anything he was sayin.

Needless to say, by the time we left, he was soused and we had to open the passenger side door on our two door car for him to puke all the way back to St. Helena where he lived! What memories you have stirred within me!!!

We coulda used somma them sturdy plastic bags for him back then but they weren't being produced yet like they are today.

TMI!:)

If you are back in the area on a nice weekend night go have dinner at Yountville and watch the foodies walk up and down the sidewalks in search of the perfect dinner, appetizer, desert, hard alcohol drink, micro brew or wine.

Yountville during our good weather is like a Disney Land for adult foodies.

Now that the Leftists know about this new, and unexpected benefit, of ‘reusable’ bag laws, there is going to be a REAL push to bring this nationwide.

Leftists are nothing if they can’t be vindictive.

Not to mention the health hazards of using reuseable grocery bags. It appears that e-coli finds these bags a good home. E-coli is easil spread this way and these bags need to be cleaned/disinfected regularly.
