A sinkhole has caused a building housing vacationers at a Central Florida resort to collapse.

Fire officials said that about 50 percent of the three-story villa at the Summer Bay Resort, located about 10 miles west of Disney World, collapsed around 3 a.m. Monday. The building had been evacuated earlier and no injuries have been reported.

The amazing thing is that there is a pond just a stone’s throw away (if even that far) and it’s not been drained into the hole.
That is truly scary. One day you are above ground. The next you are not.
The pond is actually very normal. I live in a Karst area with sinkholes all around my high ground. The sinkholes result when the cave roof below gives way.
The sinkhole drains naturally unless the drainage fissures become plugged. When that happens, a pond will form.
That is reality down the street. The new property owner brought in a small dozser to clear the slopes and the residue got pushed into the bottom. He now has a pond. With this year’s extremely heavy rains, a large pond
Additionally, given the high water table in many parts of Florida, underground caverns are generally full of water.
Water from the ground obviously isn’t going to fill an already full cavern; however, material heavier than water will.
Thus, the neighboring pond level might go up for a while, when the water in the cavern is displaced.
I’m very happy that I don’t like in an area of Florida prone to sink holes. But a quick look at a map indicates that most of central Florida is. An amazing number of natural, circular ponds and lakes.
Florida’s bedrock is limestone, which is naturally prone to being slowly dissolved by the slight acidity of rain and surface water. This makes many areas of the state vulnerable to sinkholes, with little that can be done to assess the specific risk without expensive geological testing. On the whole, Florida’s hurricanes and tornadoes do far more damage than sinkholes, while bad driving from illegals and retirees is the greater everyday hazard for Floridians.
Recently, there was a sinkhole in Toledo, Ohio.

Could that sinkhole in Toledo possibly do us a favor and take out the whole city?
Fracking’s fault.
The link is dead, but if I found the correct story, the sinkhole there was due not to Karst limestone geology but to erosion caused by a sewer pipe gone bad.
Below is another link for the Toledo sinkhole and Kansas.
