CNN’s Crowley: ‘Do We Really Care that Russia Got the Diplomatic Edge?’
The Washington Free Beacon ^ | September 15, 2013 | Staff

CNN’s State of the Union host Candy Crowley asked Rep. Mike Rogers (R., Mich.) if the U.S. really cared whether Russia had the diplomatic edge in the deal over Syrian chemical weapons, which provides a framework for the destruction or removal of them over the next year.

Rogers explained the deal was a “Russian plan for Russian interests” before Crowley cut over him with her question Sunday. Rogers replied that it was serious because the U.S. had given away the credibility of its military force by allowing Russia to take the lead in the region.

“The Syria plan has been confusing at best over the last two years,” he said. “Last week it was more confusing to the American people and more confusing to members of Congress about our national security interests. The president couldn’t quite close that deal, so that indecisiveness gave the diplomatic advantage to the Russians. They saw it, they stepped in. This is a Russian plan for Russian interests.”

Crowley interrupted there.

“Who cares? If it has a chance to get rid of chemical weapons, do we really care that Russia got the diplomatic edge?” she asked.

“If it were just that, that’s true,” Rogers said. ‘But if the president believes, like I do, that a credible military force helps you get a diplomatic solution, they gave that away in this deal. I’m really concerned about that.”

Under the deal, NBC reports, Syria must provide a full catalog of its chemical arsenal within a week and allow United Nations inspectors to start working no later than November, but Rogers knocked the deal for having a “lot of shoulds” and not hard dates.

“If you believe there’s broader national security interests in Syria, I know the president does, I clearly believe that, we have al-Qaeda pooling in the west, we have Hezbollah operating there,” he said. “By the way the Russians have been here the whole time and are complicit, in my mind, in allowing chemical weapons to be used … Remember, it’s a framework. There’s a lot of ‘shoulds,’ not a lot of hard dates. Not one ounce of chemical weapons came off the battlefield, but we’ve given up every ounce of our leverage when it comes to trying to solve the broader Syrian problem.”

Someone help remind me . . . wasn't Crowley one of those arguing during the election that Romney didn't have the experience to deal with Russia, etc.?

Well Candy...do you think that having girlish shoulder-length dyed hair covers up the fact that you are bloated pig with no morals, no honest convictions or patriotism masquerading as something as laughable as an ‘impartial’ journalist? Go screw yourself...likely the only ‘action’ you’ll ever get. B!tch

This is Iraq all over again. Took the UN almost 10 years to find and destroy Saddams WMD. And that was after the US bombed most of his known facilities prior to kicking him out of Kuwait.

russian influence in the middle east was non-existent when Teh One ascended unto heaven. russian influence will be dominant in the middle east before the spineless little idiot is out of office.

his first election was a mistake. it costs us all control over our own healthcare. but reelecting him is going to go down as an even worse decision. (more) people will die. lots of them.

What better way for Russia to get the chemicals it has provided into the hands of terrorists (al qaeda, hezbollah) then to allow them to broker a deal.

Obama says America should be concerned about Assad using them on his people, now we have to worry about terrorist groups using them on us.

Good job Bozo!! S/

“Who cares? If it has a chance to get rid of chemical weapons, do we really care that Russia got the diplomatic edge?” she asked.

Who really cares about "chemical weapons" anyway?

Assad is not punished and can still kill "dissidents" with machine guns.

This all smoke and mirrors distraction by Ubama.

And it is a valid comparison and question.

Aw, c’mon, don’t hold back. Tell us how your REALLY feel about Candy Crowley.

The stark and overriding fact is, the Russian Federation and Vlad Putin has almost completely displaced the US in Middle East influence, and they have established an undeniable hegemony over most of the region from Iran westward.

For the moment, Russia has sided with the Shi’ite faction of Islam, much to the distress of the Sunnis (represented by the Saudi royal family and the Muslim Brotherhood).

The fact that this whole thing got stuck in the eye of the Current Occupant now squatting in the White Hut only makes it the sweeter, and is purely a bonus.

Oh, I agree at the utter failure of Obama re: Syria and dealing with an Adult Russian leader.

However, I can’t be any more succinct in saying that we must debase, ridicule and intimidate opponents like Crowley at any opportunity. We must force them to reflect on the negatives we emphasize so that they are not able to concentrate on the evil they are so intent on perpetrating.

We really need to start a Neville Chamberlain Award for fools that think we can live at arms’ length with rabid dogs. For the Russians, Chinese, North Koreans, Syrians and every other country in the world, the first and most essential trait is to show strength-without it, everything you try to do is completely meaningless. Weak countries are doormats at best and graveyards otherwise.
