Letting Obama Force a Constitutional Crisis Is the Best Republican Choice
PJmedia ^ | Oct 1, 2013 | David P. Goldman

It’s worth considering the risks and rewards in the budget standoff, which is first and foremost a battle for control of the Republican Party and the shape of the 2014 and 2016 primaries.

--Snip--

[Following his strategists' recommendations that if the debt ceiling is not increased, the president should disregard it, and honor spending and tax legislation] is political overreaching of the worst kind. If Obama refuses to postpone the implementation of his health care plan in return for an extension of the debt ceiling, Republicans should stand their ground, and force the president to tear up the Constitution and assume dictatorial powers. Americans don’t like that, and they will dislike it doubly if Obama does so to protect a hated piece of legislation. It would clarify the choices before the electorate and give conservative Republicans something to run against. That isn’t enough: they have to present a credible program to restore economic growth and opportunity. But that will be then: this is now.

I am personally convinced that the delay of Obamacare is a bad idea for reasons many other FReepers have delineated elsewhere.

However, I am in favor of pressuring the Left over very unpopular legislation. So I have a mixed feelings about what "Spengler" wrote for his bottom line. (In equal parts because of the delay element the fact this was published by GOPe leaning PJmedia).

So what do other FReepers think?

How might conservatism and constitutionalism gain or lose from this line of thinking?

We are in a battle against Statist growth, and this manufactured crisis does indeed pose opportunities and risks.

One of the biggest risks could be that Obama/Reid accept some delays. Consequence from delays are that is softens the pain for voters, and so ACA continues to be institutionalized with lessened blow-back.

But we are in a battle now. So what are the opportunities and risks and how exactly do we gain ground from it in some ways suggested in Spengler's conclusion?

The first time the Welfare, and Social Security money doesn’t hit the banks on time, the SEIU-types will be burning down Republicans houses, and beating their kids at school, with the Major Network cameras cheering them on.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if Ozero and the dems had the power, they’d have zerocare fully implemented in a month with the help of truncheons and police dogs.

Are you crazy ... half the country would be FINE with that.

That's coming full-out eventually anyway, only a matter of time. In the words of Huey Long "Fascism will come to America in the guise of anti-fascim."

Now that all the "anti-fascists" have their godhead in the oval office, the right people (them) are in power, so there's no longer any need to hide their fascism or restrain their brown-shirts.

half the country would be FINE with that. You may be right that Spengler is crazy. Well, at least that is what our soviet-style media (SSM) is trying to convince of is true.

I'd like to know your answers:
Doesn't the shrillness of the SSM propaganda sound like desperation?

If you see that, and then assuming that half figure is correct (and it may not be) then
how long before that half figure dissipates because people don't like losers?

RE:”I am personally convinced that the delay of Obamacare is a bad idea for reasons many other FReepers have delineated elsewhere. “

Is it worse than if House GOP was to fold completely and pass Reid CR? (personally I think a cave like that would demoralize Dems, so they wont do it)

If not a one year complete delay would be a significant victory for Rs. Delay one year for a 6 week CR.

Then you’ll get the war you will not avoid anyway.

Get it in the open and over with.

Does anyone else suffer from the sneaking suspicion that His Royal Highness, King Hussein, is looking for an excuse, any excuse, to declare martial law?

It would give him virtually unlimited power to suspend the constitution and do pretty d*mn much anything he chooses.

Certainly chaos would ensue, but this president seems to embrace chaos as an opportunity to bring about his all-out Marxist Revolution.

No, a complete fold would be awful in addition to being demoralizing (for the GOP's continuance as an entity anyway).

But I think it wasn't an either or situation. The delay was offered as a fig leaf to avoid the shutdown and it got rejected even before the vote. So the HOR tried to demonstrate it was being reasonable. But that is a waste of time with this stonewalling Senate and Prez. See, the SSM gives them no credit anyway. And so goes the low info voter.

My strategic concern is that there is a danger from the delay itself. It is a good thing that so many FReepers see that already.

Please expand on this. How would it demoralize Dems? I like the sound of it already.

Yes. See comment number 5. And remember that Huey Long quote so you can repeat it as the opportunity presents itself, which is happening far too often. For instance, now in reply to your question.

Agreed on no delay (see tag line). Delay would wreck our chances of taking the Senate in 2014.

The other political move I've seen that looks promising is to demand "equal protection under the law" by eliminating (already illegal) waivers and carve-outs so that unions, Congress, and burger flippers ALL have to suffer under the ACA.

I am a fan of public offering Dems stuff that I am sure they will reject as a weapon to claim they are the unreasonable ones.

In this case I found PERFECT examples supporting my position on this:

Lee and Cruz themselves say they personally dont support a compromise like that but both have been going on CNN and NBC under fire and they seem giddy that they can throw back examples of how the GOP has offered to compromise compared to O who just says 'my way or highway'.
They recognize its a useful weapon. But On Levin's show its useless.

Alternately I did see thatNorthern VA congressman on TV calling for House GOP to give Reid his ‘clean’ CR claiming that House's latest CR compromise , 1 year delay in mandate and cut congresses subsity, is asking for so little its not even worth a shutdown over.
Thats not a good argument for Dems, it is a better one (but not great) for House members wanting to give in to use.

I think a one year delay is demanding too little on our part.
I would be happy with a 100 year delay though.

Keep in mind this is the same Spengler who told us in the summer of 2008 that Obama was going to lose the election.

I have no doubt that 0bamugabe would gut the Constitution and assume dictatorial powers in a naked and blatant manner if the opportunity arose.

The mask would finally slip, and the man, and his party, would be revealed for all to see.

FReepers and other constitutional conservatives would be appalled. The MSM would cheer, as they always do, as would 0bamugabe’s fellow travelers on the left. Most Americans would yawn as long as the gummint checks keep coming.
