I have a friend in a rural neighborhood where the smallest lot is five acres. Some real tree hugging hippies moved in across the street, cleared a huge number of trees and built a house. Now, they sue or call the county and complain about anybody else in the neighborhood who so much as trims a tree. (This is REAL wooded land and normal maintenance requires tree trimming.) So, people who live in houses basically built of wood are saying that nobody else can use any wood. (I’ve got mine and that’s all that counts.)
I wish they would not refer to these maggots as “scientists”. They are political activists, not “scientists”. Scientist do things that involve science. These jerks are engaged in politics. “Political scientists?”
The birds, bats, and wildlife either left the area or were killed in the fire. If it is re-forested now, nothing is disturbed. Log and re-plant now.
PS I am not a scientist nor a forester....just have some common sense.
Well, when it burned it then had nothing.
It may have critters now but they had, by definition, to come from elsewhere.
This is more like woodfolk sentimentalism than about anything else. These species likely won’t be lost. They were durable enough to get driven out and come back. My hunch is that this is probably true even for a lot of supposed endangered species (though not all). There’s nothing like a wildlife census of America. The area to be covered is too vast.
In fact I will venture that normal logging will not kill off anything significant. Being overhunted for the sake of vanity, as the dodo was, will do that. If people had thought to establish dodo farms, we’d still have the dodo.
The fires in Yosemite and Yellowstone were a direct result of bad forest management. There were too many trees, due to strict fire control. Either you have to let fires burn through unimpeded on a regular basis, as would happen in natural circumstances, or you have to manage forest growth through logging.
BTW, one of the best methods for good forest regeneration is clear cutting.

How hard would it be to find two hundred equally screwed-up-thinking scientists at a single university. This is like a petition of 200 republicans demanding Obama’s impeachment.
What is a scientist now days?
Their homes are built of lumber that comes from Home Depot and Lowes, not from priceless trees.
If everyone followed their example we wouldn’t need to cut down millions of trees every year.

More dioxin will hit the water supply in these forests from the burned and charred trees than the pulp and paper industry ever put in their waste streams.

It’s always critical habitat, yet any real scientist will tell you that the earth’s biological history is one extinction after another. Evolution calls that a benefit. The net result of every known extinction is...nothing. Who are we to stop it?
I mean if you and I were to dine on Narwhal steaks (I suspect you’d like yours medium-well just going by your pseudonym and posting history (not a scientific study, mind you)) cut from the last living specimen, while happy children danced around a pole made from its tusk, what would happen? Would the earth suddenly end?
Sure, they’d be celebrating on the Benthic level and breeding like mad, but why shouldn’t those poor, light-starved Benthic dwellers get their chance? Who’s lookin out for them? Not your surface dwelling Watermelons, that’s for sure.

Why not take several severely burned out areas and harvest the remaining burned trees to see what actually happens re the recovery of the landscape?
Might take a couple of years but the results would help to prove who’s arguments are scientifically verified.
Our company got a call from the Stanislaw NF asking about our availability to flag and and mark 50 miles of roadside salvage. They said that they were going to cut trees within 100’ of either side of the roads - they wanted it flagged and the boundries recorded with a GPS unit. Evidently, this type of timber sale falls under a negative declaration under NEPA. Maybe that is what these nut jobs posing as scientist are protesting...
Anyway - the specs on this job are incredibly wastefull of taxpayer money. All that is needed is to simply mark the trees that are to be cut. No need to run 100 miles of flag line (ie 50’ on either side of the road) nor GPS it.
I don’t know what to think about this situation - the agencies are hamstrung by enviros and court rulings - and their employees are no longer the best and brightest. Congress needs to fix the laws at some point - but until that happens - it may be best to just disband the USFS - it is simply a waste of money.
Yes! And Jimmy Carter's Department of Education along with the Department of Energy and even the IRS with either a flat tax or a fair tax. We must start chopping off these infernal tentacles of the rogue octopus of the overgrown US GovernMental mess!!!
