Will the Time Come for Conservatives to be Thankful for Obama? (Thankful for what?...)

That’s a startling question, to be sure. But it’s a question that haunted me during my recent visit to Australia. There, political conservatism is experiencing a revival of sorts after six years of socialist wilderness.

While in Australia, I kept thinking about a surprising statement made to me by a prominent American conservative leader during the last U.S. election. At that time, he said, “I will not support the Republican candidate. In fact, I hope Obama wins.”

When I couldn’t hide my shock, he went on to explain his perspective: eventually the socialist ideology in our country would over-tip its hand, and then the people would wake up and elect a modern-day Reagan.

Well, now a short time later, socialism has certainly over-tipped its hand. Our debt has spiraled to more than $17 trillion. Twenty percent of our economy—healthcare—is mired in the mud pit of Obamacare. Millions of dollars are spent on the entertainment of public servants. Billions more have been incinerated within expanded bureaucracies of ineptitude and government-funded companies, such as Solyndra. And all of this happened while more and more people dropped out of the workforce and the food stamp program expanded to more than 47 million people.

Now that President Obama’s favorability has plummeted to its lowest levels, and his diehard supporters in the media have given him “Four Pinocchios” for his Obamacare “truthfulness,” I’m wondering if my friend wasn’t prophetic after all.

To be sure, the U.S. electorate has been significantly dumbed down since Reagan’s election in 1980. But nonetheless, what I saw happening in Australia, a country with a center-left majority, could happen here.

In Australia, the socialist government of Julia Gillard began to kill the goose that laid the golden egg—namely the mining industry—by imposing a hefty “carbon tax.” The country then watched as the government—which had run a surplus under the conservative prime minister, John Howard—ran up a $500 billion annual deficit.

The people revolted, and they elected the conservative coalition in a landslide.

The first item on their agenda? Abolishing the carbon tax on the mining companies. And surprise, surprise, the Labor Party is now supporting the conservatives in that effect. One has to assume that the left did not want to become totally irrelevant.

The wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, once asked: “Why does every generation have to keep on making the same mistakes of the previous generation?” That’s a great question to ponder.

The answer I believe is that human nature is fickle and easily persuaded by silver-tongued snake oil salesmen.

But maybe Obama’s low approval ratings are a sign that folks are finally waking up. Maybe they are finally returning to the sanity of proven policies—low taxes, less government, individual freedom, and above all, respect for human life, born or unborn.

It is a dim hope, but in the end, hope springs eternal.

If you were lucky enough to catch nonfatal cowpox you were immune to fatal chickenpox. Thank God Obama is utterly incompetent. Imagine if he had been another Putin, Stalin, or Rommel.

He may still attempt a coup. (And, I hope he does.) But I don’t see it being successful.

Will the Time Come for Conservatives to be Thankful for Obama? I’ll be thankful for his departure in 2016.

It’s a perpetual ratchet…20 years of increased statism and destruction, followed by maybe 4 years of middle-of the roadism. Except for a bit of Reagan, there have been no countervailing forces to the growth of liberty-crushing statism.

More "we can win by losing!" crap. No thanks.

The old wisdom of political cycles doesn't apply when permanent, decades old mass immigration, supplies a steady supply of brand new liberal voters to the American left.

I am not thankful for anyone whose goals are to bring down my country and make us less productive, less safe, and living under an increasing totalitarian, big brother state.

You know all this totalitarian crap would be able to stop if we just intercepted and dealt with undesirables of ALL kinds Israeli-style at our borders and points of entry. ANd not 100 mile-wide border zones, just AT the damn borders and entry points. THESE would be the high surveillance zones. Get rid of them everywhere else because if we dealt with people sneaking in lethally, and dealt with suspicious folks at entry points and just arrested em and sent them back right there, we wouldn’t have to have to live in a big brother random checkpoint, cameras all fricking over, country.

Yes, but so much damage, some irreversible, could be done in the meantime.

because there’s always a groupd of dissedent idiots teaching the young people they are the ones so much smarter than the current ‘old-thinking’ generation. They sow the seeds of rebellion in young folks’ pride due to their own inexperience.

I’ll also be thankful for 0bama’s policies resulting in a super majority in congress dominated by real conservatives in 2014.

Not only for destroying this country, but for intentionally destroying this country. He may be incompetent and unqualified, but what has happened is no accident.

If 0bama hasn’t overplayed the Progressive’s hand and the American people don’t wake up to it then it will never happen.

Gee thank you President Obama. Under your direction my insurance business went to hell. I had to sell my house. My taxes went up, and my income went down.

Thank you so much for ruining my wife’s clothing business with new federal regulations and for the many insults you have hurled at my Orthodox Jewish brethren and all my Christian friends.

I am especially thankful for your dealings with the state of Israel while my child is in school there. That war in Syria and the forced negotiations with the Arabs have really made people feel really insecure and frightened. Your dealings with Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood were so special and now for the first time since peace was brokered with Egypt there are terror attacks in Sinai. Thank you so much.

Wow, and thank you for making the price of energy go up. The high gasoline prices made my car oh so much more expensive to drive. It’s been a real pleasure.

I could go on, but I am just so thankful for all the great and just AMAZING things you say. You just never know what will come out of that mouth. So precious.

So thanks. Really.

This takes into consideration the Democrats will just sit around and take the blame for this mess. They are already trying to blame the current situation on the Republicans, and with the slanderers in the press, it will catch on with a certain amount of the population. They have been claiming they need more money to fight the failing war on poverty for generations, no one has caught on enough to hold them accountable for that. And such ineptitude deflates the base, which along with the Koolaid drinking left will still prevent the Republicans from winning elections. We have seen, during the last two presidential cycles, what to expect when you hope the people will vote for you out of distaste for the other guy.

When has hoping the other side makes the wrong moves been a good offense. How about going on offense, talking to the people and explaining why self reliance is better than dependence on the government.

Sounds like appreciating how good it is to stop hitting yourself over the head with a hammer.
Or, ‘Gee it sure is great to have that case of shingles behind me.’ Better no hammer or shingles.
Or O’bammy.
