NASA Celebrates 45th Anniversary of Apollo 8 'Earthrise' Photo (New Video Released From NASA)

The Apollo 8 astronauts were the first to orbit the moon, and captured the iconic photograph during the first manned space mission after the ill-fated Apollo 1.

NASA astronauts became the first men to orbit the moon on the Apollo 8 mission, and in the process captured the historic "Earthrise" photograph.

Astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders were the first humans to see the Earth rise over the moon's horizon Christmas eve 1968.

To commemorate the event, NASA has released a new video, with actual audio from the mission and visualizations telling the story of how the photograph was almost not taken. NASA used data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft, the scheduled flight plan and the the exact time when the spacecraft begins to rotate to give the astronauts a view of the Earthrise.

The event was highly unanticipated and the astronauts were not expecting to see the Earth rise over the Moon's horizon. The now-iconic picture was almost not taken because, as can be seen in the illustration, the Earth disappears from the astronauts' view just as they are able to locate the color film for the photo.

The astronauts sound disappointed when the Earth disappears, only to realize they can see it in another hatch window.

I have always considered that the Apollo 8 astronauts were first to the moon.

They circled the dang thing, I think that counts.

Neil Armstrong was first to set foot upon the moon, but not the first to be there...IMO.

It’s pretty weird that we can’t secure a Web site, but we can orbit and land on the moon...

From the newly release NASA video;
Now for the first time we can see apollo 8's historic event exactly sas the astronauts saw them thanks from new data from NASA's lunar reconnaisance oribiter,LRO. LRO's superb global lunar maps combined with the astronauts' own photos reveal where apollo 8 was over the moon and even its precise orientation in space when the astronauts first saw Earth rising over the moon's barren horizon.

Well, it's offers very little solace, more of an empty celebration of sorts, this NASA commmemorative video, is. It's really sad and forlorn that we're celebrating an event that occurred over forty five years ago and it being forty one years since we walked on the moon and you've got some foreign interloper snooping around on property that should have been utilized by Americans who first laid claimed to it forty four years ago.

but we can orbit and land on the moon Not right now we can't. We're too busy researching the Islamic contributions to the space program (or something like that).

These are different times. This is a different nation. The America that sent those brave men to the moon is no more.

Bill Anders has his picture of Earthrise rotated with the Earth on the right and the lunar horizon going form top to bottom. He says it was the way he saw it when he took the pic. Apollo VIII was a hell of a flight and lead to Apollo XI winning the space race.

I have always wondered what the exact time it was in Houston when the Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Anders started and ended the reading of Genisis. If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

The video at the time from NASA about Apollo 8 does not include their reading from Genesis.

Maybe Omega will release a commemorative time piece to celebrate.

I need some more for my collection.

“Neil Armstrong was first to set foot upon the moon, but not the first to be there...IMO.”

Apollo 8 astronauts were the first humans to see the far side of the moon with their own eyes, that counts for something. I remember as a 10 year old, watching on Christmas Eve as they read from Genesis. It was like magic, everyone in the family was watching and speechless

From the very faded memory of a then 10 year old, it was around 9 pm central time

Thanks. Now I have a ballpark to dig around in to try and pin the time down.

The members of the Apollo 7 mission would like to give a big "screw you" to Ananth Baliga, the article's author.

Actually, as far as I know we no longer have the capability to orbit or land on the moon. We probably don't have any boosters capable of sending that heavy a payload to the moon these days, and a lot of the technology used in the Apollo lunar orbiter and the landing module in many cases no longer exists - you're talking about doing much of it again from scratch. Given the nature of government these days I doubt the US could put a man on the moon in 10 years.

The EPA would shut it down because of the possible negative impact it may have on the Moon's environment.

This picture triggered all the momentum for the Left-Wing EnvironMental religion-injection into an all-out GovernMental merger of church and state!!!

Satanic spiritual powers lept at the opportunity this narrowly focus picture that showed everyone the creation, totally alone with no other heavenly bodies in the background. With no Creator God cradling the globe in his hands like several artistic depictions had done up to the time of this fantastic photo.

Here was "Earth Island," isolated in the black, vacuous void of space, totally vulnerable and no Godly power protecting it. Now the EnvironMental Communutty could convince everyone that humans actually were capable of altering and even destroying this "fragile habitat for humanity" even though mankind still doesn't have anywhere near that capability. It's just not possible!!!

Ever since the garden of eden the exiled archangel Lucifer had waited for this very shot to be used by all those who resented what God fearing Christians, especially the WASP's had accomplished in what one astronaught described as "the triumph of the squares."

Like Lucifer, the Leftists spewed the poison into the minds of men through the media and even our GovernMental elementary educational (indoctrinational) institutions to create a groundswell of a mis-guided belief system (religion) quickly endorsed by our politicians. They even instituted an annual day of worship called "Earth Day!"

They then permeated our legal system with suffocating legislation to kill the world's leading economic super power!!!

Many of them thinking they were doing "The Lord's Work," were in fact unthinkingly doing the Devil's Dirty Work!!!

Of course we are not to hurt the earth as stated many times in the holy scriptures, but the hyperbole and hysterical brow-beating of low-information voters that we're in danger of destroying and violating our nest forever is pure vain deception by the helpers of the greatest deceiver of all time!!!

At the moment, we can't even get to low Earth orbit without going to Putin on bended knee. Muslim Outreach and proving Globull Warming are more important.
