I agree with you. Corporate greed is out of control. It's an appropriate target. So is federal and global government.

None of them want anything but the destruction of freedom, of constitutional and consevativ values. I wonder how long it will be before critical movies won't be allowed.

“First and foremost, we are not making a film about Communism and Stalinism because if Orwell was writing the story today, he would be talking about other relevant topics like globalization and corporate greed,” [Serkis] explained.

Serkis was one of the ones that Orwell warned us about.

And do you believe the practicioners in this case even realize what they're doing?

Not if they're doing it correctly.

Winston sank his arms to his sides and slowly refilled his lungs with air. His mind slid away into the labyrinthine world of doublethink. To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it, to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself. That was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.

Hollywood will become irrelevant in the not too distant future, for a variety of reasons.

It amazes me that these people will never see government greed and manipulation.

The reason capitalism is “running amok” as you say is that govt is controlling it more and more.

It is not capitalism that is the problem...it is big govt. We need more not less capitalism.

I don’t consider ‘corporatism’ and capitalism to be the same thing, and there’s certainly no dearth of films in existence or in the making which are critical of both for that matter. I guess my objection to this is the revision of a work that was intended specifically to be critical of Soviet style totalitarianism. I haven’t seen the new film of course nor would I, but I have little doubt that it’s intent is to distort Orwells message. Frankly, like a few other commenters have pointed out, what Serkis is attempting to do is somewhat Orwellian itself.

The fact is they should not call it “Animal Farm” because it will have nothing to do with the original work. Saying its the story he “would have” done now is ludicrous to the extreme.

I agree with you that I wouldn’t want the message of ANIMAL FARM distorted. My objection was to people complaining about a movie they probably didn’t see. Scorese’s movie is over-the-top, of course, but so is the greed and sleaze which he is portraying.

I agree with you GeronL, though I would use the word ‘sinister’ instead of ‘ludicrous.’

I understand your point Grania, and I’m assuming that you’re referring to the Wolf of Wall St. film. Few would argue that greed and sleeze are things to be disdained, but I for one would like to see more material about the sleaze and greed of the modern American political class (to include media and academia) and the present cultural elite (like Hollywood). That might balance things out a bit, and perhaps conservatives would then not be so suspicious of the motives behind everything that comes out of Hollywood. Happy New Year to you and yours.

Michael Moore would be perfect for the part if the pig. Storyline is that the pig made a personal fortune making movies demonizing capitalism, and sold a crock of socialism sh*t to the stupid jackasses that pay to see this pile coming to a theater near you!!!
