Tehran snubs U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's suggestion that it participate from the sidelines
Irans government has rejected a U.S. offer to participate in the upcoming Syrian summit in Switzerland. Reuters reports that the move is a snub to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerrys suggestion earlier this week that Tehran could play a constructive role from the sidelines.
The U.N.-backed Geneva 2 peace summit is set to convene on Jan. 22 and will host representatives of the Syrian opposition and President Bashar Assads government, with the aim of brokering an end to a bitter civil war that has killed more than 100,000 people and displaced millions.

Iran is better off not being part of the first round of talks, which will likely become the last round of talks between the Syrian government and the Islamist rebels.
Pres. Assad isn't going to relinquish his grip on the government and the Russians aren't going to let the western powers pull another Libya over there. The Syrian "rebels" are now fighting amongst themselves and with hardline Islamist scum being funded by our 'friends' the Saudis.
Without any western help, Syria's Assad is shaping up to be a more effective deterrent to Al Qaeda than a decade of US military action in the region.
Go figure.
