Yep, and the stupid builders keep building more mini mall strips, that cater only to the youth. They fold quickly. In order to have a thriving business, the people you hire for out front have to look normal not like a freak. And you have to cater to all age ranges if you sell clothes. Baby's R Us can get away with it, but not other type clothing stores

Would you hire this person as a sales or cashier?

We just lost our Sears so that might have saved our JCP for now.

Sears-KMart really blew it with that despicable TV ad (nothing celebrates the birth of Christ like singing genitals), I hope they do shutter them all.

Yeah, I do agree. I tend to be libertarian but personally that ad did not sit well with me either. It was very tacky to say the least and it was not appropriate for Christmas which I do agree. I did switch channels everytime it came on. BTW, they did close the Super K out my way but kept the Big K open, I was kind of surprised, everytime I go into the Big K, 90% of the time I could shoot a cannon down the aisle and not hit anybody all day.

I work for a company that used to own a large regional shopping center. We always made sure that all of our stores were open from October through Christmas, and usually into the end of January for returns. We made special deals to fill vacancies with temporary stores so we had everything open for the Christmas Season. Many of our leases expired at the end of January so that any new construction that needed to be done, was completed long before the Christmas Season. This happened every single year, good economy or bad.

I don’t live up your way anymore, but I have to think all that development by the Cabela’s would be a serious problem for the mall in Washington.

Surprised to see the Washington Mall in Washington, PA on the list. This is probably the most vibrant county in the state seeing strong growth not only from location (midway between Morgantown and Pittsburgh where I-70 and I-79 meet) but also from the natural gas industry.

If JC Penney's can't make it here, it can't make it anywhere.

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised too. Then again, I work at the Robinson Mall for a major retailer for holiday help (I hope they keep me, I'll know at the end of the week) and people drive in from West Virgina, Ohio and so on, it is a straight shot on 22 East. You also have Penney's there as well plus near the Meadows you have the Tanger outlets.

Most of these closings come from conservative communities.

Can’t help but wonder if these are the stores that were hit the hardest by the Gay Ad controversy of 2012?

Best Buy’s 2-week return policy was never a real draw, IMHO. I didn’t realize that they don’t have a 30 day policy like all the other stores I shop at until I tried to return something and was met by sneering “Customer Service” who had a hard time not snickering while I was standing in front of them. If I were to summarize the whole nuance at the “Customer Service Desk” it would be - No exchange, no return....just get out and take that thing you mistakenly bought from us with you!

Yeah, I really don't like Best Buy. First the music is too loud and tends to cater to a younger crowd (well, I'll be 48 in July, I'm a 70's and 80's kid, especially the latter) and also I do not like the way they sell. Mom and I needed a new stove and we were looking for a low priced one, even one with a few blemishes to save money. Well, they had one at Best Buy with a dent in it for $450. Mom and I said "no" and we went to Lowe's to buy a NEW one at the same price.

As we have traveled, I’ve noticed a lot of shopping centers with a lot of empty space where something used to exist. Has anyone else noticed that?

Yeah, I noticed a few places closing at the mall I work at too.

The impact of online sales is going to have a major impact on low volume retail
box stores even more over time I’d guess.

i would like to know if the bulk of these are closing in republican goveror states.

Well, PA does have a Republican governor athlough he raised the gas tax on us. He is a RINO. All I can say is "thanx a heap." I'm glad I inherited Mom's Hyundai.

I'm not, actually. The Washington Mall has been dead for years. You might recall that the Penney's initially moved down the road a few miles to a new development on Route 19. Because of subsidence, they had to abandon the new store and move back to the old one in the Washington Mall, which as far as I know has only one other viable store left in it.

I know Sears in Harbison Mall in Columbia, SC is leaving the
mall. Don’t know if they will re-locate or if that is the end. 200 out of work there if it is closing.

Two things are killing these stores.

1. Obamanomics...

2. Amazon (and other online retailers)

Even if number 1 gets fixed number 2 is still going to eventually wipe out brick and mortar stores in most towns.

Its become too costly and its way more efficient to use internet sales and build your warehouses near large shipping hubs.

Younger people are growing up using the internet to shop. When our generation is in the ground brick and mortar Dept. Stores will become scarce most likely they will be located in areas that are popular travel destinations.

Places like Wal-Mart will still be around but they will be smaller. They will have high volume stuff like food and such, stuff that people need every day. Also seasonal stuff like gardening supplies etc. and I am sure some basic clothing stuff.

But the market has changed. Gas has become far too expensive to drive around searching for things when its all at the tip of your fingers and can be delivered in just a few days. And the cost of maintaining high priced real estate to put a showroom in every town is just too much, not to mention the cost of all the unfunded government mandates employers have to deal with like Obamacare and such.

Ding, ding!!! We have a Winner! I think you get the kewpie doll for today. B-)

I think there will always be brick and mortar stores but as you said, not as much and they will have to change focus. I can see outlet stores remaining plus maybe a few higher end stores like Macy's and so on. I know the two major outlets near me in Pittburgh are Tanger between Canonsburg and Wahington and Grove City near the junction of I-79 and I-80. As you put it, I can see Wal*Mart remaining and perhaps food stores as well with emphasis on low cost such as Bottom Dollar Food, Aldi's and so on, for us poor chumps who have to pinch pennies.

I love the internet, but there is a side of me that wonders if it is truly a detriment to society in some ways like this. I think overall we put too much reliance on it and if I may borrow from the Bible, it is like a modern day Tower of Babel, I fear one day, something will happen where it will break apart, crash or whatever and we will have to go back to the old ways but in that transition, there will be lots of chaos and problems.

> “Looks like JC Penney, Sears and perhaps Best Buy are going down.”

I can see JC Penny doing that. Didn’t think Sears or Best Buy were of the same persuasion.

I think the perverted deviant homo promoter / embracers are starting to learn their lesson.

I go walking at a local mall. Every year right after Christmas, at least 1 store closes. This year it was 3. Plus McDonald’s in the food court closed. Things are bad when McDonald’s closes.

Are you talking about Robinson Mall west of Pittsburgh? McDonald's closed in the food court there too. A lot of us at work were upset with that. I know I go there for my meals when I go on my breaks and maybe I spend a little too much but I basically live and work there and McDonald's was help with the dollar menu. I once had to drive to get a real meal, with the death of my mother and my iffy cooking ability, I had to gt a decent meal somewhere.
