CPAC Immigration Panelist: ‘Latino Voters Are the Reagan Democrats of Today’
National Review ^ | 3/7/2014

Posted on 03/07/2014 6:55:59 PM PST by Altura Ct.

Two participants in a panel on immigration at CPAC today expressed confidence in their closing statements that Hispanic immigrants will be a source of future votes for the Republican party. “Latino voters are the Reagan Democrats of today,” said Alfonso Aguilar, the executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles. “I believe that the majority of them can actually be members of CPAC in the future,” concurred the Reverend Luis Cortés Jr.

The panel was supposed to answer the question: “Can there be meaningful immigration reform without citizenship?”

Derrick Morgan, vice president of domestic policy at the Heritage Foundation, was the only one of four panelists to basically reject the premise of the question, saying that he wasn’t the best person to say whether legalization should include a path to citizenship since he didn’t think that Republicans should be pursuing a policy of comprehensive immigration reform at all right now: “I respectfully disagree with the policy of legalization with or without citizenship,” he said, instead favoring a piecemeal approach, beginning with enforcement. He noted that the current laws are not being enforced so “why would you trust this current administration” to implement a deal?

Aguilar vehemently disagreed: “Conservatives need to address immigration, and they need to do it now,” he said, adding that “our conservative base wants us to lead and legislate” on the issue. Alfonso said that in addition to immigrants doing the “jobs that Americans don’t want,” immigration “creates good-paying jobs for working-class Americans.”

Reverend Cortés declared that “immigration is the only policy matter where God agrees with God,” by which he meant, he explained, that all religious communities supported immigration reform — “even the Baha’i.”

The reverend warned that the Hispanic community is becoming alienated by Republican rhetoric on the issue, much like “African Americans left the party of Lincoln due partly to rhetoric around civil rights.” “The Hispanic community is about less government, it is afraid of big government,” he added.

At one point, Reverend Cortés took issue with Morgan’s use of the word “amnesty.” “If you look it up in the dictionary it means forgiveness at no cost,” he said, and it would not apply “if someone comes forward” and has to “do recompense” as he said Republicans are proposing to require of immigrants currently here illegally.

The fourth panelist, Helen Krieble of the Krieble Foundation, advocated for a large guest-worker program, and pushed for her organization’s “Red Card” solution.

They’ll be voting Democrat for 200 years.

The Republicans need non Hispanic voters in the midwest to get to 270.

The criteria shouldn’t be whether illegal aliens are potentially Republican voters...the criteria should be whether a person who comes here does so respectful of our laws!

Why are the GOPe so eager to slit their own throats, electorally speaking?

Are they really that stupid, or are they just more interested in the short-term benefits of cheap labor for business than they are in the long-term benefits of preserving America?

RE: “African Americans left the party of Lincoln due partly to rhetoric around civil rights.”

I remember those days. That's true but here's the "rhetoric"

Being for the Tenth Amendment -- even if you were vehemently against the Jim Crow laws in some states -- you were denounced as a racist Republican.

If you were disturbed by the violent rioting and backed the local police in support of law and order you were denounced as a racist Republican.

It matter not one whit that Republicans out-voted Democrats in support of civil rights issues IIRC.

The Rockefeller Republicans like Nelson Rockefeller, Scranton, George Romney, et al. denounced fellow Republicans and anyone who supported Goldwater as "purveyors of hate" and virtual KKK members -- even if you were vehemently against the the Jim Crow laws in some states.

BTW, Reagan never, never, never promised presidential amnesty for Democratic Party members who needed it and voted for him.. so in no way are ILLEGAL aliens comparable to Reagan Democrats.

They COULD be, but they are more interested in the handouts than any other topic, and I speak of the overwhelming majority of “Latinos”.

I’ve spoken with “Latinos” in Southern California who are here legally and from my understanding, the bulk of those who actually believe in earning an honest living are not fans of illegals and are disgusted with them.

Conservatives can win over enough Hispanic voters to make the difference.

As proof that they are not a total lock for democrats, Hispanics who are Protestant voted 44% republican in 2000, 56% republican in 2004, and 48% republican in 2008.

We need to reach them, for instance in Texas many Hispanics voted against Davis in the primary, the GOP should be striking while their separation from her abortion message is fresh in their minds, we need to reinforce their suspicions that they are members of the wrong party, that they are supporting an unmasculine, immoral, exploitative, backwards looking party that doesn’t reflect qualities that Hispanics generally respect in individuals and in self identity.

I beg to differ. We have been told for over thirty years that Latinos were really conservative and just dying to become Republicans. The last few elections have proved that to be false. Hispanic Americans voted democrat by a margin of something like 75-25 in the last three or four elections. I do not think more than 35% have ever voted Republican. Even for Reagan.

“...I do not think more than 35% have ever voted Republican...”

I agree with you. While many Cubans and Salvadorans vote conservative they are NOT a majority. Even heartthrob Eduardo Verastegui could not lead many Mexi-fornians away from voting for Obama.

“African Americans left the party of Lincoln due partly to rhetoric around civil rights.”

They switched parties in 1936.

Up to and including 1932, they had always been GOP and voted about 70% GOP in 1932, then they permanently reversed in 1936, with 71% for the democrats, and always voting democrat since.

This is unlike anything natural in politics, an instant and total, and permanent, reversal, in a single election, and for the same president that they had just rejected by about 70%.

I don't know what dictionary Cortes is using, but here's the one I saw:

"the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals."

Says nothing about cost. It says forgiveness, which is what AMNESTY is.

The root cause of the 1986 Amnesty Debacle was a lack of punishment for the Illegal Alien Invaders from Mexico by Federal authorities in “both” political parties.

Now the States will have to take matters into their own hands, and all Hell will break loose.

Once again the US Federal Government has chosen to ignore their own laws.

I found my numbers.

Blacks voted 23% for FDR in 1932, when they were republican, then they voted 71% for FDR in 1936, when they made their group switch to the democrats.

That is not natural, it was a total and permanent reversal.
