Long before the Chevrolet Cobalt became known for having a deadly ignition defect, it was already seen as a lemon. Owners complained about power steering failures, locks inexplicably opening and closing, doors jamming shut in the rain — even windows falling out. I can't think of decent small car besides perhaps the Saturn that GM made that could compete against the Japanese. Part of the reason is for GM small cars are money losers. They make their profits on SUVs and trucks.

The Saturn was a good car, but the problem is that they kept building the same car for a decade.

The original Saturns were good cars, when GM folded Saturn under the GM corporate structure from their original autonomy they went south in short order.

Weren’t Cobalts just a re-branded imported car?

“The Saturn was a good car, but the problem is that they kept building the same car for a decade.”

But isn’t that exactly what the Japanese, and for that matter, the German automakers do? BMW changes their car lines about once every ten years.

I think the Cobalt was based on an Opel design.

Next time you see a GM truck during the day, notice that many have just one light lit someplace. That’s not a wiring problem, it’s a software defect. It’s so frequent that many owners simply live with it.

The new GM CEO is getting her turn in the barrel and the House Reps are having their way with her right now. Unlike the IRS boss, this woman sounds like she’s trying to clean up a big mess.

Uh, no, that’s called a poor quality BULB. GM is notorious for the grill lights failing in short order.
2002 Chevy, and 2007 GMC. I was always replacing one of the grill lamps. Now I drive a FORD for a company truck....
