Tea party vs. establishment as primary season opens - The Washington Post

Between now and the end of June, more than two dozen states will hold primary elections.

A major subplot of this year’s midterm elections is the competition between the Republican establishment and the tea party wing of the party. The establishment is fighting back, but has the tea party already won?

The general election is still six months off. But Tuesday opens the summer preseason of intraparty contests, which starts with an important primary in North Carolina. Between now and the end of June, more than two dozen states will hold primary elections. After a July break, the preseason will end with another round of primaries in August and early September.

The five primaries in which incumbent senators face direct challenges from tea party conservatives will be most closely watched for clues about the balance of power in the GOP. They involve Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Thad Cochran (Miss.), Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.), Pat Roberts (Kan.) and Lamar Alexander (Tenn.).

At this point, all the incumbents are favored to win. McConnell is first up, with a primary on May 20 against Matt Bevin. One earlier primary also involved a tea party challenge. That was in Texas, where Sen. John Cornyn easily survived.

Gee, the mainstream media SURE is interested in all this apparent infighting in the conservative ranks. One would almost think they want to sow even more discontent. But they wouldn't do that, would they?

McConnell still could be removed by any vote necessary.

That is another reason to establish up to 49% of GOP primary voters will help elect a Democrat to remove someone who is toxic.

Mike Rounds and McConnell could lose anyway. Ed Gillespie will waste so much open borders money.

I won't be voting for Cornyn in the general election. That liberal can KMA.

No one in our family is voting for him but I know a lot of people who will just pull the “R” lever. Cornyn didn’t exactly win by a landslide. I would hope that he received some kind of message from the number of people who didn’t vote for him but I really doubt it.

Never let up. Remember the Romney / Obama debates? It looked like Romney was going to sweep the debates but 0 came back and evened the score and even gained an edge. Never give n inch andpush it till its done especially with this administration’s deception & manipulation tactics....

Anybody who thinks McConnell is going to lose to Bevin has got rocks in his head. Ditto for Boehner in his primary challenge. There is no way the state GOP in either Ohio or Kentucky is going to let the party leaders in the national legislature lose. It’s just not going to happen. In fact, it even looks like Lindsey Lady Graham is going to cruise in above all the non-starter campaigns that were arrayed against him. On the list above it only looks like Cochran has the chance to be dumped. The rest of them are looking home and hosed.

I hope for great upsets. I know Ted Cruz wasn’t and isn’t wanted by the establishment.

Come on Kentucky! Come on the rest of you wild and crazy states. Shock the media and shock the establishment!

You are probably right. Unless they have a brain aneurism, a stroke or a massive heart attack and kick the bucket, they will probably survive the Primary. But, I don't know if you are aware of how many Pubbies hate non-principled RINOs like Mitch McConnell and the rest of those crusty, old farts who have been in Washington since Lassie was a pup. They can no longer count on Conservatives holding their nose and voting for the Party guy. Many will skip the Senate Race on the ballot or vote for the DemocRAT. He who does not like vengeance has never tasted it. See Post #3.
