U.S. Senate primary runner-up Sam Clovis plans to accept a nomination for state treasurer at this Saturday’s Iowa’s GOP convention, TheIowaRepublican.com has learned. Clovis, a professor and the chairperson of the Department of Business Administration and Economics at Morningside College in Sioux City, confirmed the news Thursday evening.
“This all developed in the last 24 hours or so,” he said.
Clovis has received a lot of encouragement to run over the past couple of days, which at first he shrugged off, but after hearing how serious people were about him running, the former Air Force pilot started giving the idea serious consideration.
The most impactful boost came from Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds during a Thursday evening phone call. They expressed a lot of excitement about Clovis’ potential candidacy and pledged to assist him in raising funds and if he receives the nomination.
Dr. Clovis also has a remarkable resume, in the public and private sector. His background and experience will measure up very well against Democrat incumbent Michael Fitzgerald.
“I come from a business background. I worked with large budgets when I was in the military. The whole idea of being able to make sound investments, I’m a conservative, so I’ll make sound investments and protect the taxpayers’ money and the wealth of the state,” Clovis said.
Despite raising far less money than any of his opponents in the U.S. Senate race, Clovis finished a surprising second. That success was based mainly on his strong showings during the three-dozen forums and debates the candidates participated in. Clovis’ extensive knowledge of the issues was unmatched. He became wildly popular with grassroots conservatives in the state and made a late move from fourth place in the polls to runner-up.
The addition of Clovis to the Republican ticket will provide an incentive for Tea Party and social conservatives to remain engaged in the process and get motivated to turn out in November. It also gives the ticket another high profile name.
“We have got to do something to unify this party,” Clovis said. “I would have never considered this 24 hours ago and now I think this is exactly what needs to be done.”
John Thompson announced his intentions to run for treasurer on the Republican ticket a few weeks ago, but Clovis will be the overwhelming favorite to secure the nomination. The 2,000 delegates to the state convention will choose the nominee, since no candidate applied for the ballot prior to the June primary cutoff date.

“The Republican Party, at this point in Vermont history, is pretty much on fumes,” said Garrison Nelson, a professor of political science at the University of Vermont. “It’s the least relevant it has been in the close to 50 years I’ve been in the state.”
There’s no rat running against Lt Governor Phil Scott, the rat dropped out in favor of Progressive Dean Corren, so as not to split the vote.
No Republican is running for any statewide constitutional office, other than Scott and 3 in the Gov race. Former State Auditor Randy Brock decide not to run.
The only GOP candidate for Governor with a website is some hemp farming women with a psuedo-hippie campaign spiel that I guess only seems coherent if you’re high.

Travel Agency Owner Scott Milne, who got in at the last minute, appears to be the official party choice. I hope hippie lady doesn’t win the primary, or else I’ll have to endorse the Libertarian candidate.

Weird. I know the state was taken over by insane socialists starting in the 60s and 70s, and had become dominated by RATs in recent years, but Republicans still occasionally win office there, and I could have sworn just a few years ago we had 4 out of 6 of the statewide constitutional offices in VT or something to that effect, because Jim Douglas and his Lt. Governor headed the executive branch, the state auditor was elected as a Dem but switched parties to the GOP, and the GOP won something else in VT that I can't recall at the moment.
And it looks like the Republican Lt. Governor is STILL in office. Yeah, it’s not much, but at least they have a token statewide office, so it’s better than California or Massachuttes:

Assuming he wasn’t a total RINO after he switched (or only switched for some sleazy reason ), the VT GOP ought to recruit that guy to run in 2014. It shouldn’t be hard for them to win as long as they slate credible candidates. I’d say its their own fault for the sorry shape they’re in during an expected GOP year.

Such a shame Brian Dubie wasn’t able to win the Governorship in 2010.
I guess Vermont is the current title holder of “weakest state GOP”. They’re not even trying.
Again, this proves the VT GOP's status as "weakest state party" is self-indicted, IMO.
Elsewhere, Scott Milne describes himself as a "pragmatic GOP moderate", so I'm assuming he's an Olympia Snowe type RINO. But since the alternative appears to be a kooky "legalize weed" candidate, I suppose we'll have to root for him.

Hawaii holds the title for weakest state GOP. I just saw polling data yesterday that has Abercrombie trailing David Ige, his Democrat primary challenger. Ige appeared to fare even more poorly against Duke Aiona in a general matchup. Barring a disaster, it looks like we’ll take that office back.
It’s amazing after all those years in Congress with the voters approving of Abercrombie that he did a total 180 once back in Honolulu. It’s almost on par with the disastrous showing of Frank Murkowski, who similarly crashed and burned in AK and took third place in the GOP primary in 2006 after a single term as Governor.
Maybe, that whole “1 State Senator” thing helps make that case. Something happens to Sam Slom and we could be shut out in chamber for the first time since.....I’m guessing one of the deep south states in 1960’s. I looked at data from Daily Kos showing how Hawaii districts voted for President and Senate, there are actually 3 more Republican Senate seats than the one we hold, including that of the traitor Gabbard. The seat that gave the highest % to Lingle and Romney is that of rat Clayton Hee.
But at least they’re trying in Hawaii to win 2 of 4 major races. Vermont has token candidates for Governor and US House and no candidates for every other statewide office, except for their incumbent LT Governor. Pathetic.
I saw that HI primary poll. I would have thought Ige would do BETTER than Ambercrombie against Aiona, since he’s not a Haole or the unpopular incumbent.
I’m still worried about Mufi Hannemann maybe taking more votes from us than the rats.

They may be uphill fights against those 2 entrenched rats but you gotta try.
Long since overdue to elect Conservative Republicans to those offices. A Republican hasn’t won the IA Treasurer’s office since 1978 and the Attorney General’s office since 1974.
Does it matter? We need a replacement for Grassley in the Senate when he croaks. What’s her name the rino is good for 2 terms only.
Of course it matters. Having leftists in key offices undermining the Conservative agenda ? That’s intolerable.
As for a successor to Grassley, I think Rod Blum would do well. He’s almost as Conservative as Steve King. King seems to have passed on running for the Senate. The only downside is that Blum will be 67 in 2022 when Grassley’s present term ends. If Ernst serves two terms, that seat won’t be up until 2026.
