Gene Kelley’s home was hit with the artillery shell after it was fired at the Oklahoma Full Auto Shoot and Trade Show. No one was hurt in the incident, but the cannon’s owner has agreed to pay for Kelley’s damages.

Homeowner Gene Kelley heard a huge crash and was shocked to find a 14-and-a-half-inch-long 105 howitzer artillery shell lying on his bedroom floor.

The gun range said they thought the cannon was aimed at the bottom of a valley. I'm curious if people go for walks in the bottom of that valley. Incredibly irresponsible.

Gene Kelley was able to dance out of the way in the rain of fire.

(If you’re old enough you’ll understand)

Sound like it should only have been tested deep in the Nevada desert, fired by Chumlee.

Yeah, if you have a howitzer its probably not a good idea just to be firing it off at random and assuming the shell will land somewhere safely...actually that’s good advice even if you only have a .22, always know whats in the direction your shooting....

Well....let me tell you something.

I've actually been to that event. And the valley is a small creek bottom..and very secure...there's very good security and fire control.

Not sure exactly what happened here...but my radar is up and alert.

So...in short you have no idea what you are talking about.

I’ll take your word for it on the security, but Gene Kelley would disagree about the fire control.

.22s from a rifle can travel a good ways and still go through 3/4 plywood.

When I was a kid in 1958, my nephew and I made a mortar of an old driveshaft and a propped up aluminim chair. We filled it with black powder (PROBABLY just a tad too much)and put a quarter pound ball bearing in it. We had aimed at an empty field about an eighth mile away, but it went of and kicked the aluminum chair away and went through three garages and hit my grandfathers ‘45 Packard in the fourth garage. Sheeeeeet! You wanna talk about child abuse!!!

My dad was a battery commander in the Field Artillery. He mentioned encountering a similar issue. This could be caused worn trunnions on the field piece.

Unrelated, but are there any military people here who can tell me what it means when a military aircraft is doing “powder work”?
