French authorities say they foiled an Islamic terrorist plot reportedly targeting the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and a nuclear power plant last year.
The revelation comes as the country unveiled new anti-terror rules which included a proposal to ban terror suspects from leaving the country if it is thought they intend to fight abroad, The Telegraph reported.
French authorities revealed they arrested a 29-year-old Algerian butcher living in southern France June 2013, after they found coded messages between him and a high-ranking Al Qaeda member discussing how “to conduct jihad in the place you are currently,” according to Le Parisien.
The suspect, identified in the newspaper report as Ali M, reportedly said he would target French landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and “cultural events that take place in the south of France in which thousands of Christians gather for a month.”
The father of two reportedly had signaled his willingness to travel for training before returning to France to “await your instructions,” the Telegraph reported.
French police say they arrested him a month before he was to travel to Tunisia, and then Algeria for training.
“There are doubtless others on our soil programmed to harm French interests,” French anti-terror judge Marc Trevidic told Le Parisien.

Air France Flight 8969 was an Air France flight that was hijacked on 24 December 1994 by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) at Houari Boumedienne Airport, Algiers, Algeria, where they killed three passengers, with the intention to blow up the plane over the Eiffel Tower in Paris. When the aircraft reached Marseille, the GIGN, an intervention group of the French National Gendarmerie, stormed the plane and killed all four hijackers.[1]
All of the hijackers died. The 166Note a remaining passengers and crew survived the 20-minute gun battle.[2] Of the 154Note a remaining passengers, 13 received minor injuries.[2][3] Nine of the 30 GIGN operatives received injuries; of them, one received serious wounds.[2] Three crew members received injuries.[3] Dhellemme was struck by bullets in his right elbow and thigh.[2] Bossuat received minor injuries; the dead bodies of two hijackers had shielded Dhellemme and Bossuat from gunfire. Borderie, the most seriously injured, fractured his elbow and thigh from the 16-foot drop.[3] Favier said that he determined that the operation was a success since none of the GIGN received fatal injuries. French Prime Minister Édouard Balladur said that the events unfolded “exceptionally well.”[2]
A former militant group leader admitted that the men had planned to detonate the aircraft over the Eiffel Tower. The militant group never again attempted this plot. Pasqua said that if the militants crashed an aircraft on the Eiffel Tower or the Élysée Palace they would have committed what they would believe to be “an extraordinary feat.”[2]
I was in Paris in December 2005 shortly after the summer’s Islamic riots and saw intense security around the Eiffel Tower and Louvre with two man patrols with automatic weapons. On New Years eve the CRS (Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité), French riot police were plainly visible as were police in plain clothes ...obvious by their bulky coats concealing weapons and them not drinking. Whether President Holland will have as strong a reaction to these threats remains to be seen.
They also like to be able to pay next to nothing to people to make them clean their gardens and houses and everything else.
I’ve heard some scuttlebutt that Halal butchers are on the jihadi watchlist all over the planet.
