In this Tuesday Jan. 21, 2014 file photo, former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell speaks during a news conference in Richmond, Va., accompanied by his wife, Maureen.AP
As governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell was a savvy southerner often talked about as a hot Republican presidential prospect for 2016.
Now hes fighting to stay out of jail.
The fall-from-grace narrative is a classic one, a rising-star politician who accepted lavish gifts from a rich businessman seeking help from state government. But this tale had a twist: McDonnells wife, Maureen, was a key go-between with the executive, Jonnie Williams.
In a Richmond courthouse, the former governor has mounted an eye-opening defense, saying that his wife was smitten with the guy while their own relationship had collapsed.
I guess desperate times call for desperate measures.
Call it the broken marriage defense: Bob McDonnell says hes innocent because his wifewho is also on trialwas flirting her way into a sleazy relationship with Williams. And Maureen is on board with the legal case.

OK. I’m done. I thought they had been railroaded, but I’m thinking they’re insane.
If a democrat had been involved in this same thing, it would have been cause to promote him.
Geeze, what is this, Dawn of the Living Dead or something? Get outside once and a while you two.
She’s the “Cougar Defense”.

Proverbs 15:27
“Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live.”
I know a woman who reminds me so much of these two with her own shady business flipping houses, and another man who has a life sentence in prison for fraud. Both went to Regent University (just like these two). The prosperity gospel - beware of these types.
They’ve brought down the Republicans in Virginia by their greed. So sad for all of us.
I’m with ya on insane.
As I discovered after 25 years of Prosecution, they are pretty much all guilty. And I have NO doubt he and his wife are.
Couldn’t agree more. Sadly, very sadly, I’ve gotten to the point that if someone leads with “I’m a Christian” I put my hand on my wallet.
And to think I was proud of my state the night this guy was elected. What an embarrassment.
Oh, please.
The more anyone talks of their ethics, patriotism, Christianity or general integrity the tighter I hold my wallet.
Just what I was thinking.
He should change parties. With his resume he’ll rise to the top.
