My SGM in Germany was a 1LT in Vietnam that got RIF’ted. He voluntarily took a bust to E-7 and stayed in for 30 years.

I was in a unit with a former Full Bird Colonel chopper pilot that flew medevac’s in Korea and Vietnam. When he could no longer pass a flight physical, he retired from the Army, joined the National Guard, and took a bust to E-5 to become a company armorer.

I was struggling with my PT test in the Army Guard due to arthritis and shoulder injuries as a garbage man. I joined the Air Guard, took a bust to E-5, and finished out my 20.

If you REALLY love the military, there’s a place for you somewhere.

Worth repeating. When I was in the USAF, I sometimes told subordinates what your battalion commander said about the Army, only using the USAF instead. When the cuts came, they often seemed to have pulled the names out of a hat.

Count on it. If I recall correctly, those surveys were under Bush, Sr. and again under Clinton. Neither time would any of us fire on American citizens. We were Airborne Infantry. As I understand it, a preponderance of pogues (POGs) declared that they would fire on American citizens as ordered. That tickles me a bit.

I have a friend who was Marine Infantry. His experience is much the same as mine although, being Marines, most of them either destroyed the survey outright, returned it with choice words written in black marker, or, as one did, returned it crumpled with a smear of feces on it and a note regarding what the Marines thought about their survey.

Actually, I was going to vote third party because Romney is nothing but Democrat-lite, but I lost my nerve at the last minute and voted for Romney (not that it ever matters - I'm from California). For all those (conservatives) who decided not to vote Romney, I fully respect their decision.

Here's what I don't do: waste time whining about how some people decided not to vote for a guy that we would have reviled here at FR if he had been running as a Dem. The sh*t was going to hit the fan in this country (and the world) eventually because this country has been steadily moving left for decades. Romney is PART of that leftward movement. I'm glad the sh*t is hitting the fan NOW so that maybe I can do my part and absorb some of the pain so that the next generations don't have to. Selfish idiots wish we could have voted in socialist lite so that we could have eeked out another couple of decades before it all fell apart, so they can "get theirs" and to hell with the following generations. People like that make me sick.

They sure do. Truman drastically reduced the size of the military after WWII. Eisenhower reduced it even further. I am sure many who wanted to stay in were told they had to leave. This always happens at the end of wars. Always.
