Retired Marine Gen. John Allen has been selected to coordinate the international effort against the Islamic State militant group, Secretary of State John Kerry announced Saturday.
"General Allen is a patriot and a remarkable leader," Kerry said in a statement issued late Saturday. "His extraordinary career in the military speaks for itself."
Allen's official title is Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL. ISIL is another name for the Islamic State, which is also known as ISIS.
Allen, who has been serving as a security adviser to Secretary of State John Kerry, is expected to work with the nearly 40 nations around the world who have agreed to join the fight and help them coordinate what each will contribute.
Allen comes to the job with vast experience coordinating international allies on the warfront. He served as deputy commander in Iraq's Anbar province from 2006 to 2008, working with Arab partners on organizing the Sunni uprising against Al Qaeda. He moved from there to serve for two years as the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, which oversees military troops and operations in the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia.
Allen next became the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013, where he worked with international allies who sent troops to the battlefield.

He also has an unexplained and unexamined relationship with Islamist spy Jill Kelley that lead to Allen's "retirement" at the time of the Petraeus scandal - which was also connected to Kelley.

I think this is for the State Department element of the campaign, not the Defense Department. ?? But not sure.
They picked the next fall guy. I wonder if John Allen knows he will be forced and is expected to fail. I pray that it doesn’t cost American lives.
They had to pick someone they had something on and who would not go running to the press when is fired, re-retired and made an example of.

This was a very politically motivated appointment and also clearly Obama did not want to be connected in any way with a military response. So the SOS is now running the show?
Allen is probably somewhat compromised and maybe not totally respected - and why get a retired general when you could get someone in current service who has more on the line?
Typical “we’re fighting but not really, truly seriously” approach.
In this administration, the shady, corrupt, treasonous and incompetent are handsomely rewarded. Do the right thing and you’re fired, maybe even ruined or killed. Do wrong and you are elevated to a command post.

Since there is no international coalition at this time, I guess he won’t have much to coordinate....
Barry is leading from behind in his own administration. I'm sure there were meetings about the selection process, and Barry told Jean Francois that he didn't want to be bothered with the details of vetting candidates.
These guys are taking way to long to get this operation up and going, and they have to go to the press with each move.
Just don’t know what they’re doing and it really shows.
