GOP plans to honor budget deal, even if Republicans win Senate

House Republican appropriators say they will follow the two-year budget deal reached after the 2013 government shutdown regardless of who wins control of the Senate in November’s elections.

Winning the Senate would give the GOP more leverage in spending fights with the administration, but GOP lawmakers have signaled they don't want to open a new bruising war over spending by rolling back the 2013 budget deal, in which Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) agreed to spending caps for the government for the 2014 and 2015 fiscal years.

On the cusp of an election that could deliver them the Senate, Republicans don’t want to give themselves any self-inflicted wounds right out of the gate. “The option before them is to clear the decks in lame-duck, get 2015 out of the way, so that they can come into next year focused on new business, not old business. That’s the argument no matter who wins the Senate,” said Sharon Parrott, a vice president at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities.

Lawmakers are expected to introduce an omnibus-spending bill in the lame-duck session to fund the government through September 30, 2015. The short-term spending bill currently in effect expires on Dec. 11.

“The committee is working on some technical groundwork so that we can begin negotiating an Omnibus after the election. Omnibus legislation would last an entire fiscal year,” said House Appropriations Committee Spokeswoman Jennifer Hing, who indicated it would be based on the 2013 budget deal.

Keeping to the terms of the 2013 deal would likely make it easier to agree to a government-funding measure, and limit the possibility of another shutdown that damaged the GOP brand in 2013.

And so the gutlessness continues. Full funding past the elections, then full funding so the new congress can't do anything about it. Then they'll play the same game next year.

Not one dime’s worth of difference. $17T will be $20T by 2016. Both parties suck.

Talk about a buncha worthless, gutless, POSs that aren’t worth voting for.

I’m SICK of this “vote for this louse, ‘cause his opponent is a lot worse” BS.

One can just hear the cries of, “But if we don’t support the RINO candidate, we’ll end up with a Democrat in the seat.”

Democrat, RINO...two sides of the same coin.

The GOP is nothing but Romney forcing RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE
down everyones through with his imposition of gay marriage
and polygamy.

The GOP, the GIVE . OBAMA . POWER party is
worse than Ebola (which at least is honest).

Why vote? Nothing is going to change even if the GOP retakes the Senate.

The GOP is running on administering the status quo better not on changing it.

The GOP brand. LOL

The only identifying characteristic of the Republican "brand" is that it stands for nothing, except for perhaps exceptional weakness. In fact, if there was a survey asking voters what the Republican Party stands for few would even hazard a guess. Its a vacuous party without a soul.

It’s important to get out and telegraph your intention to surrender on all points well ahead of time so that you have more leverage to negotiate and reach across the aisle, or reach around, rather.

Precisely right. But its actually worse than than. The GOP is guilty of false advertising. It lures gullible and unsuspecting GOP voters into voting for its candidates who will do nothing but perpetuate the status quo. That’s just outright devious.

+1. Excellent comment.

When Republicans “reach across the aisle” its usually to hand some favor or concession to Democrats.

When is the last time the dems reached across the aisle to support a Republican budget cut or tax reduction?

If I was a Democrat, I’d thank my lucky stars everyday for the Republican Party. Nothing better than having a weak, clueless opponent.

I looked at the ballot in my state, no even Rino candidates for house and senate. Out of about 15 positions only 2 so called Republicans, Governor, and SOS neither have a chance. Why bother?

The GOPe wants to maintain the welfare state up to and including Obamacare.

In a recent ad, Iowa Senate candidate Joni Ernst said she supports “affordable health care”.

The Murray-Ryan budget plan is pure Western European austerity, cutting military pensions, creating new taxes in the form of “airline fees”.

Its the model of worse things to come from the Uniparty in Washington.

They will honor obamacare too, traitors to the republic. Their main objective “if” they get control is to reach across the isle. Sick of these cowards
