BARRETT TWP., Pa. - Another tool in the police arsenal used to try to find an accused cop killer has not been as useful as hoped, officials said.
A surveillance balloon borrowed from the Ohio Department of Transportation has been returned, according to State police spokesman Tom Kelly.
The unmanned mylar balloon was not helpful, due to the tree canopy and rugged terrain of the search area, Kelly said Wednesday.
Authorities have been searching for 31-year-old Eric Frein for more than six weeks.
Frein is the lone suspect in the ambush shooting of two state police officers in the parking lot of the barracks in Blooming Grove, Pike County on Sept. 12.
Cpl. Bryon Dickson was killed and Trooper Alex Douglass was seriously wounded.
Frein is suspected of hiding in the wooded areas of the Poconos, especially near the Candensis, Monroe County home of his parents.

Maybe he offed himself.
It was a trial balloon...
Isn’t this the sort of situation where bloodhounds can be of some use?
Not a lot of people are good at "spotting" through the woods. They look at their feet too much...
Why are they wasting so much time and money on 1 guy? He must have something good on these guys,
You would think....By now, he probably smells pretty bad...maybe even have deer p*** on him.
Effects of Frein Search
October 21,
MONROE COUNTY The search for Eric Matthew Frein has shifted as bloodhounds, troopers, and federal agents converge in the Swiftwater area.
Giving the cops more power, more money, more tools at EXACTLY the time they’re less trustworthy than ever in US history.
Very stupid.
Won't that be interesting.
How do they know it wasn’t helpful? Maybe it told them Frein isn’t there...
Has any motive been established why this guy would try to kill police?
Strange that they would not have understood ahead of deploying the balloon that “the tree canopy and rugged terrain of the search area” might hamper its usefulness.
It is very hard to prove a negative.
"Absence of evidence is NOT evidence of absence."
Meanwhile Geraldo will be interviewing him on Fox ....
We had an elderly lady disappear in our neighborhood in early spring. The police brought in dogs, helicopters with infrared, ATV’s, horses etc and searched for 3 days before calling it. A private K-9 crew came in on the 4th day and found her 300 feet from her house within an hour in the woods caught up in barb wire where she had been the whole time.
Motive remains a mystery. Police said Frein has made anti-government statements in the past, but his only recorded run-in with the law appears to have been a theft charge 10 years ago in New York state.
Those cops had prayed it wouldn’t come to this kind of an unwinnable contest: a battle of wits.
