Balloon doesn't locate Frein
The Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | Oct. 29, 2014

PHILADELPHIA — The helium-filled balloon that was deployed to search for Pennsylvania fugitive Eric Frein has been returned to Ohio.

“Due to the tree canopy and rugged terrain of our search area, the balloon was not as helpful as everyone hoped it would be,” said Pennsylvania State Trooper Tom Kelly.

The dense woods of the Poconos have hampered every method of searching for Frein, police have said. The terrain has made it difficult for officers to search for the slaying suspect on foot, with search dogs, with helicopters and now the unmanned balloon.

I would think most of the tress have shed their leaves by now. Maybe this guy is not even in the search area.

does it matter?

As soon as they call off the search and say “no more overtime”, he will be found.

We had a similar hunt here in NYS. I believe he was close to the NY/Penn border and had some friends who were helping him.

I believe someone is helping this dude, too. With little radios and GPS, a friend can direct him away from the search area.

Someone in the search party?

Take all the radios away...except for LE and see what happens.

Wait till it gets cold. The trees will have lost their leaves, and it will make the use of IR detectors much more practical. They will be able to spot fires, warm bodies and even the mouths of caves.

Put out a new AR-15 and a couple of bricks of ammo. Shoot him when he comes out to fetch it.

I seriously wonder what the level of search would be if the guy had gunned down two civies instead of state troopers.

I guess I know. Sadly.

Winter did not seem to help them capture Eric Rudolph. It took them five years, and it was pure luck when they caught him; a regular patrolman spotted him digging through trash, it wasn’t any of the searchers with their expensive, fancy equipment that found Rudolph.

Those cops had prayed it wouldn’t come to this kind of an unwinnable contest: a battle of wits.

I had a summer home in the Poconos. You could hide a hundred people in the typical patch of 5 acre woods and you'd never ever know it. The glacial boulder scattering and tree litter and canopy cover everything. Ten feet any one direction and there are huge rocks.

Hunting season will bring tens of thousands of footprints everywhere.

Much like Eric Rudolph, you'll probably find him at a diner dumpster on some county road diner scrounging a meal.

TREE leaves are almost all down, except for a few lingering oaks and hickories.

The problem is the underbrush...Mountain laurel and rhodedendron hold their leaves (albeit shriveled) through the winter.

I have discovered the error in the Law Enforcement Agencies use of the balloon.

It was an “unmanned balloon”.

Silly ossifers shudda known better than neutering a balloon and expecting results from it afterwards.

;-)

FLIR is magical in the desert. Not so much in wooded areas.

It seemed like a wasteful plan.

I don’t believe for one second that he is still in that area. No one just up and leaves a firearm behind. It was meant to be found to clear his escape route. He knew that when the snows come he will be found by way of his tracks. He has had help.
