Genetic Entropy Points to a Young Creation

by Jeffrey Tomkins, Ph.D. *

Many creationists believe that the bulk of scientific evidence for a recent creation comes from the fields of geology, physics, and astronomy and that biology and genetics have little to contribute. However, data that confirm a young creation are rapidly emerging from genetic studies performed by both creationist and secular scientists.

One of the most important finds in recent years came from modeling the accumulation of mutations (genetic code errors) in the human genome over time using computer simulations. Researchers found that this buildup of mutations can only reach a certain level before the genome completely deteriorates and humans go extinct. This process of degradation, called genetic entropy, fits perfectly with a recent creation of six to ten thousand years ago.1,2

Just to clarify, when ICR or other similar orgs use the phrase “secular scientists”,

they are referring to a scientist who is not employed by a creation science organization, or to someone who does not hold to a young earth viewpoint.

...There has been great confusion about this on FR in the recent past.

From the article:

“The resulting data showed a very recent, massive burst of human genetic diversification—mostly associated with genetic entropy. One author stated, “The maximum likelihood time for accelerated growth was 5,115 years ago.”5 This places the beginning of the period of genetic decline close to the Genesis Flood, when the earth began its repopulation through Noah’s family and humans rapidly diversified (Figure 1).8”

Image and caption from the article. My comment is below.

This lifespan data from the Bible begs MANY questions.

Genetic Entropy is based on the ideas of one scientists. The common sense explanation of why genetic entropy is wrong is detrimental mutations will not be transferred as they will not survive across multiple generations.

I read this a couple of weeks ago in ICR's "Acrs & Facts" publication, and was going to post it; but the ICR site didn't yet have it listed. I'm glad someone else is noting these good science-based answers to evolutionism theorists.

In another recent thread, an evolutionary contender insisted (wrongly) that my understanding of entropy was in error. This article speaks to the assumptions that commenter imposed on the physical chemistry and statistics of naturally occurring processes, and that's why I wanted to see this article brought up here on FR.

Thanks!

How did they establish that DNA is as old as Creation?

The common sense explanation of why genetic entropy is wrong is detrimental mutations will not be transferred as they will not survive across multiple generations.

Your assumption here is not common sense, where common sense says "naturally occurring processes tend toward a maximum of entropy."

The sense is that all mutations from the original design are detrimental, in the long run.

You creationists seem to be posting the same discredited arguments time and again. Why I'm Bored Of Talking To Creationists is an article in Science 2.0 that pretty well sums up the situation. No matter how many times you address a logical fallacy or misinterpretation of observations the just pop up again and again. John C. Stanford and his idea of genetic entropy has been repeatedly debunked.

Fishtank, you never even answered a simple question from your post yesterday on this topic. I take it you are not interested in discussion, but just spamming what you have been told.

It is funny that you cite an article which cites actual science articles like this “Keinan, A and A. G. Clark. 2012. Recent Explosive Human Population Growth Has Resulted in an Excess of Rare Genetic Variants. Science. 336 (6082): 740-743.” It is as if they think this proves their article when the actual science in the article refutes everything they say! The article indicates that human studies in human genetics indicate that modern humans have been around far longer than 10,000 years, but that from 10,000 to 8,000 years ago there was huge population growth. Even at ten thousand years old for an age of earth would totally refute the young earther’s strict literal interpretation of genesis.

Fishtank, open you eyes and stop just believing the nonsensical justifications of reactionary bible teachings. It is NOT a choice between old earth science OR the scripture. The scripture and science harmonize on an old earth, local flood.

Yep.

As time goes on, the evidence for not only creationism, but for young earth creationism, gets stronger and stronger.

“Fishtank, you never even answered a simple question from your post yesterday on this topic. I take it you are not interested in discussion,.....”

What caused the huge population growth?

Why does it coincide with the flood timeline?

Why are the bloodlines bottlenecked at three or four female individuals?

Why does this correspond with the development of written history?

Why does this also correspond to the most verifiable ancient text in human history (the Bible)?

Why do the Biblical accounts of the patriarchal lifespans fit an exponential decay, when there are mythological/pagan accounts of lifespan reduction that instead fit a step function compared to exponential decay?

I am interested in discussion, but when I post an article, there are also many Freepers who are young earth Biblical creationists, who thankfully post discussions, since we all have limited time in our busy days.

One of the most important finds in recent years came from modeling the accumulation of mutations (genetic code errors) in the human genome over time using computer simulations. Researchers found that this buildup of mutations can only reach a certain level before the genome completely deteriorates and humans go extinct.

Mutations are continually being selected out of the human genome over time. If a mutation results in the mutated organism being disadvantaged over its non-mutated cousins, the organism is more likely to die, and take its mutation with it.
