Susan G. Komen’s Moral Dilemma
National Catholic Register ^ | 10.09.14 | JUDY ROBERTS

Posted on 11/06/2014 4:33:39 PM PST by Coleus

As a two-time breast-cancer survivor, Eve Sanchez Silver once supported the Susan G. Komen organization in her personal fight against a disease affecting hundreds of thousands of U.S. women each year.  But when she found out while serving on the group’s National Hispanic/Latina Advisory Council that Komen was giving money to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s No. 1 abortion provider, she knew she had a problem.

“Here was a breast-health organization — a very life-affirming organization, from my perspective — funding an organization that essentially kills people. I couldn’t understand why they thought that was okay.”  Sanchez Silver, a retired medical-research analyst from Red Bank, N.J., resigned from the advisory council in 2004 and now advises people to direct their donations for breast-cancer research somewhere other than Komen. She recommends giving to local organizations, provided they are not involved with Planned Parenthood and do not perform abortions.

However, her concerns with Komen go well beyond the Planned Parenthood connection. As someone who had two abortions before her diagnosis, Sanchez Silver is troubled by Komen’s denial of abortion as a cause of breast cancer.

On its website, Komen lists abortion, along with caffeine and cellphones, as among the factors that do not increase breast-cancer risk, saying, “Although there was some debate in the past about the link between abortion (also called induced abortion) and breast-cancer risk, research clearly shows no link between the two.”  The position ignores research to the contrary, as does the organization’s stance that states current or recent use of oral contraceptives only slightly increases the risk of breast cancer.

I once spent the better part of a Saturday surfing trying to find out about this SGK and exactly what was going on.

My personal observations were that the board of directors (one is SGKs sister I think) make a hell of a lot of money.

I also could not find a link where they actually delineated who they gave money to for real cancer research, the amounts or anything of the sort.

I found plenty about how cancer survivors and those concerned for cancer victims could participate in this 3 day thing and collect a bunch of money to do something nebulous for some innocuous feel-good reason, but nothing substantive beyond that.

I finally capped off my assessment (again, purely my impression) that SGK was about money and, with their on and off, and on again sponsorship of Planned Parenthood activities (who were FORCED to admit in 2012 had NOT ONE mammogram machine in the whole country). Some here may recall that one of the board women, Karen Handel, ended up quitting over their duplicity.

Each time I see that little ribbon at the checkout counter of Kroger and they ask me for money, I ask “Is it for Komen? If so NO!”

ALL women’s groups seem to have connections to abortion.

It’s my understanding that PP essentially “bought” SGK in order to get a captive lap-dog that would stand out in front of them and scream to the world that there was no link between abortion and breast cancer.

It’s like a trade association of tobacco manufacturers buying out a second-string heart or lung research philanthropic organization.

Yes, the organization is named after a woman who died young from BC, and her sister started the org. Interestingly, the Left criticizes that sister for being a Republican, and the Left criticizes Komen for stopping the PP funding.

But there are other complaints about Komen: I’ve read that Komen sues smaller fundraising groups to stop them from using similar phrases and symbols. They say they don’t want donors to confuse those groups with theirs. OK, maybe that’s understandable.

But still another complaint is from terminally ill patients: they complain that the org stopped fundraising “for the cure” and has pretty much given up on them.

Yes, I have been in southern DE for over 8 years now. NJ taxes were too high.

However, a brand new grandson has us thinking about relocating to the Garden State again, but as renters.

If they find a cure, they can’t do anymore fundraising.

Abortions also increase the risk of breast cancer, so SGK should not be funding PP on that basis.

BB, you’re a hoot. Thanks for the belly laugh.

Believe me, I would love for them all to come here to DE.

I’m a city boy, but I have come to love the rural area I am in.

When I go visit NJ, it is like an alien world to me now.

That lasted about a week or so, then the funding was back on after the media excoriated them

Thanks for posting. Komen made a pact with evil.

This usually happens when charitable organizations get too big. Yes give locally.

Komen does sponsor local Relay for life events. So be careful who you are writing a check to. No one can go wrong IMO writing a check to a Children’s hospital.
