Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that people in Washington don’t think it’s a good thing to be labeled as middle class.

Speaking at the American Association of Port Authorities convention in Houston, Biden reminded attendees of his nickname, “Middle-Class Joe.”

“In Washington, that’s not meant as a compliment–it means you’re not sophisticated,” Biden said.

I was "middle class" growing up in the 50's and 60's. In the 80's, I was on the brink of making into the "upper middle class." In this century, despite herculean efforts, I've slid back into the working poor, which is exactly where my great-great grandparents were when they got off the boat after An Gorta Mor.

No one lifted them into the middle class - they made it by dint of their own efforts in the face of of great adversity.

Now we have "multi-culturalism." What happened to "E Pluribus Unum" and the Melting Pot?
