Staying beyond that would be “detrimental for the country and I don’t need this,” he told the Tass news agency.

Putin, 62, has effectively led Russia since he was first elected in 2000. He stepped aside after two four-year terms to abide with constitutional term limits, but retained power as prime minister and was elected in 2012 to a six-year term. …

9 years is plenty of time to get that pesky constitution changed.

While I whole heartedly agree with your description of him the Russian people love him and don’t see him as a tyrant at all!!!

That would make him 74 years old by the time he left office.

He would have ruled longer than Brezhnev but shorter than Stalin.

But of course, its easy enough to change the constitution if he wanted to stay in office.

Remember, what a politician says today means nothing. Who knows what will happen in ten years?

He already is effectively President For Life, no matter that he tries to claim he is only serving as long as the voters want him around.

Yeah, right. He’ll give it up a few days before he dies and goes to hell.

I don’t care much about Putin, but I do expect that within the next year or so obama will write an EO, stating he will remain in office another 8 years...the precedent has been set and accepted...WHO WILL STOP HIM.

2024 should be enough time to qualify him for the US democrat presidential ticket. Being foreign-born is no longer an issue. And he’ll be younger than his chief competition: Biden and Hillary.

Putin died quietly in his sleep last night. In other news bread prices have stabilized at 1.5 million rubles a loaf.
