There are fewer Americans in prison, jail, probation, or parole than any time since 2003

The US corrections population dropped to its lowest point since 2003, US Attorney General Eric Holder announced Friday.

The number of Americans in prison, jail, parole, or probation dropped to less than 6.9 million in 2013, down 41,500 compared to 2012 and hitting the lowest point since 2003, according to a report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Until 2008, the corrections population had been steadily growing for decades as all levels of government enforced tough-on-crime policies — particularly against drug offenses — that tied up more people in the criminal justice system. But states and the federal government, facing budget constraints brought on in part by the cost of maintaining large prison populations, began pushing reforms that reduced penalties for nonviolent offenders and diverted more people to punishments besides incarceration.

George Carlin once made fun of the euphemism “out walking the streets” . . . I’d say he’d have a problem with so many bad guys “walking the streets” today, i.e. if his brain still worked.

Ghani was originally considered a candidate for a war crimes trial for alleged firing rockets on U.S. bases in 2003. But he was cleared for release, like the other three, in a 2009 Justice Department led task force review.

“Police stop pursuing nearly 79,000 fugitives” Headline USA today, and that is just California. So yea your right, not fewer criminals just fewer arrests.

Ah... That explains the rise in crime was saw over the last year.

Local news is shocked that tourists ar getting robbed during the day in some areas of the city. I guess now we know why.

Enforcing the laws and punishing lawbreakers be racist. And it’s interesting they say fewer “Americans.” No mention that illegal immigrants make up a large percentage of the prison population.

On the lighter brighter side more Americans have home security systems, have slowed their ‘mall’ shopping, and are staying home to be safe. So yeah, crime’s down. Victims are staying home ....
