Jan. 8, 2011: Palin/Giffords and the Media's Descent into Hell

The facts are simple and incontestable.  On January 8, 2011, deranged, obsessed druggie Jared Loughner opened fire at a political rally for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, killing six, wounding 14, and nearly killing Giffords, who was the object of his obsession.

Loughner stands in a long line of similarly deranged murderers and attempted murderers of politicians such as Hinckley, Bremner, Sirhan, and Oswald.  These men, as far as their mental capacity gave them a logical reason, were motivated by concepts that ranged from obsession with an actress to conspiracy theories to "prov[ing] my manhood" and other bizarre motivations.  In none of these cases could a direct causation be traced to a supposed motivation by or influence of a political figure not connected in any way to the assassin's victim.

Yet immediately after Loughner shot Giffords, Markos Moulitsas who runs the far-left "progressive" Daily Kos, tweeted, infamously, "Mission accomplished, Sarah Palin[.]"

What could have possibly motivated such a monstrous public statement, even from the purveyor of a site so lacking in morality that it was the home of the "Trig is not Palin's son" calumny during the 2008 election?  Palin's PAC had put out a map with a series of "targets" (actually surveyor's marks, not bulls-eyes, as the left claimed) on various congressional seats, including Giffords, where voters were urged to defeat the Democratic candidate in the midterms.

From that, and without any scrap of connecting evidence whatsoever, Moulitsas and, to their shame, elements of the mainline media converged on Governor Palin.  The fact that his Daily Kos had done exactly the same targeting (Kos, incredibly, had "targeted" with a bulls-eye Giffords also – as too conservative),

There is no better example of that hypocrisy than WaPo columnist Eugene Robinson.

Memory can be a confounding thing. 2011? That’s not very long ago. When I recollect the event I put it around 2003-2004 (which I know to be wrong).

Yep, and for two to three days, the media kept running continuous video loops comprised of footage/imagery of Giffords, along with blood on the pavement, the photo of the little girl who was shot and killed, and Sarah Palin walking up to a podium at a tea-party event. The media dumped the bloody bodies right on Palin’s doorstep. An incendiary juxtaposition of imagery worthy of Eisenstein and Soviet-era propaganda films. Over a hundred-thousand death threats made to Palin and her family as a result.

Even more galling, virtually no GOP leaders spoke up and came to Palin’s defense. The silence was deafening. And sickening. Just about all respect I ever once had for the Republican Party died that week, witnessing their cowardice and dishonor.

I can see the video editors in the news rooms splicing the Palin clips into the slaughter scene, as they view their work they are high fiving and congratulating each other.

I think a similar scene was played out across the nation during the 1012 presidential debate when Candy Crowley and Barack Obama set up Mitt Romney for an orchestrated take down. I was stunned when I watched it live and I could almost hear the collective cheers reverberating in newsrooms and studios across the liberal mediascape.

Although the shooter was a loon, he was a Leftist loon. He was a fan of Gifford, but got miffed that she didn't pay him the appropriate homage when he tried to contact her.
The Media's storyline that this was related to Sarah Palin's 'targeting' Democrat candidates during the election was a malevolent lie - and they knew it.

In this instance it is clearly "the enemy of my enemy (Palin) is my friend." The GOPe was so scared of her, maybe even more than the Left, they welcomed any derogatory events that would hurt her.

Just happened to catch an episode of “Frontline” on PBS last night. It was about the NRA and included quite a few clips of Gabby Giffords. For PBS, it was fairly close to a balanced presentation, but no 1 currently active with the NRA agreed to be interviewed. It was an interesting recap of events surrounding the NRA and the gun control movement, but definitely not a defense of the 2nd Amendment.
