Wondering how Obamacare affects your tax return? Relax: You just need to know your NABPP and SLCSP from your SRP, MEC and ECN – and follow the IRS's 21 PAGE guide

- Lengthy and impersonal 'Publication 5187' is now available as Americans grapple with Obamacare's impact on their annual tax returns
- Includes 4-page glossary of terms and acronyms taxpayers need to understand because of the Affordable Care Act
- Boiled down: Get medical insurance, prove you aren't required to, or pay a new tax
- Some example scenarios in the IRS manual are more than 150 words long, use confusing language and refer taxpayers to still more instructions

**SNIP**

The manual, called 'Publication 5187 – Health Care Law: What’s New for Individuals & Families,' is 21 pages long and written with all the compassion of a mediaeval dentist.

VA, Affordable Care Act and You

What is the Affordable Care Act?

The Affordable Care Act, also known as the health care law, was created to expand access to coverage, control health care costs and improve health care quality and care coordination. The health care law does not change VA health benefits or Veterans’ out-of-pocket costs.

Three things you should know:

1 VA wants all Veterans to receive health care that improves their health and well-being.

2 If you are enrolled in VA health care, you don’t need to take additional steps to meet the health care law coverage standards. The health care law does not change VA health benefits or Veterans’ out-of-pocket costs.

3 If you are not enrolled in VA health care, you can apply at any time.

Veterans Enrolled in VA Health Care

The good news is that Veterans enrolled in VA health care programs have health coverage that meets the new health care law’s standard. You do not have to take any additional steps to have health coverage. Read more if enrolled…

Veterans Not Enrolled in VA Health Care

Veterans not currently enrolled in VA health care program can apply for enrollment at any time. Read more about enrolling…

Family Members

VA offers health care benefits for certain family members of Veterans through programs such as the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) and the Spina Bifida program. Read more about VA family programs…

Your family members who are not enrolled in a VA health care program and who do not meet the health care law coverage standards should use the Marketplace to get coverage.

Additional Health Care Law Information

We understand you may have questions about the health care law and how it might affect you and your family. We compiled basic information about the health care law to help you make informed decisions about your health care. Let us know if you have questions regarding the health care law and your VA health care at 1-877-222-VETS (8387). After all, ensuring you receive quality health care is not just our obligation, it’s also our privilege.

I just go to TurboTax and let them do the math.

Easy; cheap; no hassle; email filings for both state and feds. Nothin’ to it.

Information about Members of Your Household.
To complete the ACA filing requirements on your 2014 tax return, information about all members of your household and their income, whether or not you claim them as a dependent, will be required. The requirement for this information goes far beyond any thing we have seen in the past. Your tax professional may need to see (or prepare) the tax returns for all members of your household who have 2014 income. So, make sure your children (including college students) with earnings, parents, and other members of the household who have income can provide the information to accurately prepare your (and their) tax return.

I use Turbo also, but I’m afraid computers have really been an enabling device for the FedGov continue to make the tax code mind numbingly complex.

I very much doubt that TurboTax implements this particular part of the tax scheme.

The IRS hired 15,000 attorneys and accountants for this.
So no surprise here.

To paraphrase the song:

Players play
Coaches coach
Accountants calculate
Lawyers write paragraphs of regulations

In the example for Ervin - the last sentence makes no sense: "consequently, Ervins premium tax credit for 2014 is the lesser of $5,000, his enrollments premium, and $2,888...

There is no "either or" to choose from - it appears to show all numbers added together, not the lesser of any of three choices

How do you know that .. have you heard from them ..??

I’ve used them for years, and they always seem to be ahead of the curve.

But .. I don’t give a rip what you use.

If anyone here signed up for health insurance on the Federal exchange from any of the 36 states that did not set up a state exchange, just file for a filing extension on Feb 1.

In fact, everyone should just file/demand an immediate filing extension.

The USSC has hinted they won't decide to decide untill June 2015, on the tax subsidies and schedules for 2014.

Hopefully, most people here don't use the IRS as their savings account, and don't anticipate/expect a large tax refund from the Feds.

Actually, it is proper to use "and" in this case. Here, "and" does not have the meaning "plus."

Think: "The richest of the following four brothers: Ted, Fred, Steve, and Bill."

However, I assert that the word "lesser" is wrong, and should be "least."

Regards,
