Gun control in Europe obviously does not apply to the police. They can be armed with whatever weapons the government wants them to carry.
I don’t think it’s a good idea for routine police patrol officers to carry excessively powerful weapons, owing to the potential to stupidity and accidents. But they should have them at hand if they need them, like in the trunk of the cop car.

Back in the 60’s I can recall seeing a Federal gas gun, or a shotgun carried above the driver side doors of many patrol cars.
