In 1856, the Whig Party ran former president Millard Fillmore for president of the United States. Fillmore had last run in 1852; he'd been denied the nomination as the party fell apart over the issue of slavery.
In an attempt to bring the party back together that year, the party nominated General Winfield Scott, who promptly imploded in the general election against Democrat Franklin Pierce. "We are slain!" shouted Representative Lewis D. Campbell of Ohio. "The party is dead, dead, dead!" Free Soiler Charles Sumner wrote, "Now is the time for a new organization. I think my neighbor wears a wig.
If they don’t stand for anything, will anyone miss them?
The GOP is trying hard to accomplish this, alienating what should be their base to try to win a fictional middle that will never support them.
One can only hope.
Whigs fell apart over slavery.
Repugs will fall apart over modern slavery...illegal aliens.
They can go with Jeff Sessions and Steve King on that, or...go the way of the Whig.
I thought they already did.
If this Congress can’t straighten things out, I am done.
I left once before but came back. And as long as there’s a possibility of a Ted Cruz administration I’ll stick around.
No, they’ll just join the Democrats..
The republican party consists of criminal traitors to the Constitution. Obama boot-lickers. The shame of the nation.
After that we got "Read my lips no new taxes...Here are your new taxes"
It's quite a bit more complicated than that. There are many, many votes to be harvested from patriotic and hard-working Americans who would die before they would vote for a Republican. THAT is the reason the GOP must die - a new governing party cannot arise until the GOP is destroyed, or destroys itself.
The Republican party has just gone into new onwership.
The Democrat party is now the socialist party.
The Republican party is now the Democrat party.
The Tea party is now the Republican party
Who are these “Republicans” you speak of? Are you trying to suggest that there’s a political party that stands for the principles of a Republic? Why was I not informed?
The Whigs also fell apart because they had a stupid name that meant something a coupla hundred years earlier about being rebels and nonconformists.
Free Soil, Free Men, Freedom - Fremont.......
Cripplecreek and I came up with that reference over Three Years Ago!
