Part-time Staples workers are furious that they could be fired for working more than 25 hours a week. The company implemented the policy to avoid paying benefits under the Affordable Care Act, reports Sapna Maheshwari at Buzzfeed. The healthcare law mandates that workers with more than 30 hours a week receive healthcare. If Staples doesn´t offer benefits, it could be fined $3,000 in penalties per person. Buzzfeed spoke with several Staples workers who revealed their hours have been drastically cut over the past year. Many reported working as few as 20 hours. The workers started a petition on Change.org asking

200,000 of the 230,000 Jobs that were supposedly added last week were “second” part time jobs. Read it here on FR.

Well, when I was 18, I worked three jobs. But then, I was just a Kid trying to make some extra bucks, not an “established” Adult with grownup responsibilities.

Which makes my 18 year old self equal to Lord Obama. I heard he worked a real job at Baskin Robbins for a week or two when he was 18.

I said this way back when Obamacare was first passed:

First THIS would happen. Reduction of hours to stay under the number required to provide full benefits. What else can a company do? It’s really not their fault. If the business model can’t support paying out that much money to employees then the answer is don’t do it. It’s either that or go out of business... and then there’s no part time jobs either.

Now... the NEXT thing that will happen:
Part time jobs will begin to have standard segmentation in a week. Either Mon-Wed Thu-Sun or possibly morning and afternoon shifts that revolve entirely around having employees be able to hop between jobs. Not because they wouldn’t rather work one job 40 hrs... NO! Because most jobs won’t ALLOW anyone to work more than 20. So a whole new “normal” work hours schedule will pop up so when you apply for multiple part time jobs everyone will use roughly the same schedules.

Just give it time. It’ll happen soon. And it’s pure lunacy.

God help the people that work two full jobs a week now. It’ll become more like 3 or 4 part time jobs on this crazy travel schedule all week long.

I’ll have to check that out.

We’re in CA and my Wife just got a part time Job. They told her she would be working up to 25 hours a week.
No Benefits but above Minimum Wage.

“It’ll become more like 3 or 4 part time jobs...”

But look on the bright side - Obama can claim that he has created more jobs! (Yes he already has, and this is why he can say that.)

Doesn’t sound quite right.

The Employees do not schedule their own Hours, the Managers do. I assume the Managers are the ones that could Fired.

It’ll become more like 3 or 4 part time jobs on this crazy travel schedule all week long.

And this will lead to more traffic deaths. People will become exhausted from working multiple jobs and driving extra miles from job to job.

Many people will drive 20 or more miles between jobs. They may have to wait around several hours to clock in. The employer won’t want them sitting around on the work floor so they may have to sit in their car in sub-freezing weather so a few might freeze to death.

ObamaCare will cost lives but mean employers will be blamed.

yea ....everyone , including older folks that should be looking at retirement by now , instead are strapped in to multiple low paid part time jobs , under employers that scam their way around the mandatories of the ACA .

It’s probably all wink & nod at the top . If some low level employee makes any noise , the Gov just gives an under-the-table exemption to the big employer and the employee(s) are quickly canned . End of job = end of problem(s)

The Staples in my small Indiana town shut down...couldn’t stay open. There are others in the same thongs all due to Hope & Change Socialism and the healthcare that was allowed to go unchecked by the citizens of the US...

I ended up posting this in the article below the other one...apparently I clicked when yawning...I should be more careful...

This legislation is crap. I looked into retiring early now that I’m 62. Obamacare for my husband and I would be $1,600 per month for both of us with a $12,000 deduction on the silver plan. It’s like not even having courage. You would have to spend 1,000 per month on medical expenses before you meet the deductible in addition to the $1,600 premium. Baby boomers who have been carrying this country for the last 40 years should be screaming from the rooftops.

Not my experience when I was there. I worked 12 hours a day sometimes for 9 or 10 days straight without a day off and it was mandatory. If you didn’t like it, too bad. I finally retired at 58 last year. They were also very strict about being there off the clock for any reason. It was never allowed.

Here's the A-9 table. The 200,000 increase in people holding multiple jobs is near the bottom of the table.

Who would have thought ...?

As a supervisor at a company years ago where over 25 hours per week was considered full-time (with full benefits - it was to accommodate a few specific positions), I understand why Staples does this. We had to do the same, and would have people pull all sorts of nonsense then hand in timesheets with 26 hours. They hadn’t done any work past 25; they had just screwed around, and we put a stop to it.

Anyone who has supervised full-time hourly employees understands that they are protected from the egregious abuse of “unpaid overtime” often heaped on salaried employees; we had to make sure they took their scheduled lunches and left on time to avoid having to pay overtime. Companies that failed to take these steps lost a lot of money in court after laying such employees off; when the employees could prove they had worked extra hours (often over the span of years), they were awarded overtime pay for it - and they deserved it.

I worked in a restaurant from 5 am until 11 am M-F. I then went to my other job from 12-6 M-F where I was a supervisor at a Boys Club and then had classes from 6:30-9:30 M-Th.

My days started at 3:30 am and I was completely exhausted but loved it. My husband said it
built character and I now agree. Kids today refuse to work that hard.
