Sir Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld comic fantasy series of novels, has died aged 66.

Publishers Transworld announced the news “with immeasurable sadness”. Managing director Larry Finlay, said: “The world has lost one of its brightest, sharpest minds.”

The author of more than 70 books died at his home “with his cat sleeping on his bed, surrounded by his family” earlier on Thursday.

Pratchett, who had early onset Alzheimer’s disease, leaves his wife, Lyn, and their daughter, Rhianna.

He had, said Finlay “enriched the planet like few before him”.

Read where they brought his favorite black hat to the Discworld convention last year, to represent him in absentia. I hope they keep doing that.

I ceased reading his books at some point, but I think I have several dozen of his early ones. Not sure that he’d appreciate it, but I’ll say “God bless” and “Rest in Peace”!

Now he’ll learn whether it’s really turtles all the way down.

My DIL will be in deep mourning when she reads this. She and my son were part of a committee that brought him to Madison for the 2011 Discworld Convention.

Somebody needs to put a cassette in the casket with him, then dig it up in a few years and see if it’s turned into Queen’s Greatest Hits. I was just thinking a few weeks ago about how he’d announced he was dieing and was still kicking, sure hope I didn’t jinx him.

A very talented writer indeed. Didn’t care for some of his opinions of course, but always enjoyed reading his stuff a lot. RIP.

They probably met! I don’t know about your daughter, but my son and DIL tend toward the liberal side of politics. So, we don’t discuss politics. Much. :-)

My first Pratchett novel and I just reread it last year.

Bookstores have whole racks dedicated to his volumnous works.
