I think it was meant to be:

“Greens much softer”?

I don’t know if that was from rain or water scheduling.

Just reiterating what I heard this past week from commentators, that the greens were must softer than usual and they were rolled in a different manner than past years.
I’m not expert in greens keeping, just posting what they were saying.

Please. He played quite well this week. After no tourneys in two months and no success in over a year due to back surgery, he put together a pretty good week. Tiger will likely be right back to the top this year. He’s going back to work on his swing and will likely resurface in May for some practice tourneys before the Open. I would not be surprised to see him win it or the PGA in August.

Did you see the swing? He hit something solid under the pine needles. At that speed, it can do some serious damage.

“Yup. He has become injury prone. No doubt.”

Too many injuries and a few years ago he looked like he bulked up.

Steroids?

Tiger’s main problem is not lack of talent. Anyone who wins 76 tour events including 14 majors has talent coming out of his ears. Tiger’s problem is he is getting old, and the swing which won all those tournaments was a young man’s swing. In his 20’s his club head speed was astonishingly fast.

The reason “Big easy” Ernie Els and Vijay Singh are still playing great at their age is because they always had beautiful smooth swings. Tiger may and may not be able to adapt to an old man’s swing. Radical swing changes are never easy.

Have you noticed Bubba Watson’s arms? They are very lean. That is the reason his swing speed is tremendously fast. He does not have to accelerate massive arms. Bulking up works great for sumo wrestlers, home run hitters, street fighters, but not for golfers.

I agree with your point - Jack’s 17 under was unbelievably good, but I also think Augusta has changed a lot over the last 50 years.

- many new trees (15 in particular)
- holes lengthened (11 in particular)
- greens much faster

Jacks -17 under has to be the greatest 4 round score ever at Augusta IMO.

...

Jack kept some records of his drives at the Masters, and he was hitting it between 320 and 350, just as long if not longer than what they are hitting it today. Augusta was under 6800 yards back then and with absolutely no rough, but, you are correct, Jack’s win may have been the best golf ever played at Augusta.

Old Tiger got stung pretty good from that root in the pine needles. In his prime he would have cut the root in two and hit the pin.

Yes, age and mileage are taking a toll.

In his prime he would have cut the root in two, hit the pin, got telephone numbers from 8 blondes, 2 brunettes and a dynamite redhead, and set up a ménage à trois with a set of twin 18 year old girls from Sweden for that night.

In his prime his swing would have pulled the tree up by the roots and sent it sailing to the green.

I play decent with modern weighted clubs.

I tried to play a round with my dad’s old blades and was all over the place. But he could “feel” the ball better with the blades.

My skill level has not advanced to the point that I can ‘feel’ the ball. I’m more of a ‘swing and pray’ type golfer.
