It depends on your perspective. The Great Society has made those connected to the government wealthier than could be imagined a few decades ago. The richest counties in the US surround the DC area.

Obama’s solutions fall back on liberal bromides going back 50 years. We don’t know all the facts surrounding Freddie Gray’s tragic death. But as a general matter, it is easy to believe that the Baltimore police are corrupt, dysfunctional, and unaccountable — because most of the Baltimore government is that way.

This is a failure exclusively of Democrats, unless the root causes of Baltimore’s troubles are to be traced to its last Republican mayor, Theodore Roosevelt McKeldin, who left office in 1967. And it is an indictment of a failed model of government.

Rich Lowry gets it...

Baltimore was a manufacturing city, as was Milwaukee, Detroit, Buffalo and numerous other cities that are sliding into chaos.

Shipping our manufacturing base off to Asia didn't help this. You can either pay people to make things and learn to be productive, or pay them for doing nothing and leading destructive lives.

The Dems completely own this, and I haven't seen this mentioned by any of the televised news outlets I watch.

'Course, I may have missed it when I muted Whorealdo or that little George-Michaels-wannabe-preppy-girly-man Fox threw out to the ferals. Hehehe. d;^)

In one of the myriad of interviews with Baltimore officials and residents, someone brought up that the most difficult neighborhoods suffered greatly with the loss of manufacturing, and haven't come back.

The only way to solve anything is US jobs for US citizens. Drop the handouts....everyone should be able to do something if they want to get stuff.

We are not the US I grew up in without (1) the work ethic and (2) the confidence that if one prepares and works hard they can have a good life.

How about "ALL lives matter" or "US jobs for US citizens" as slogans that might direct things toward real solutions?

Black communists Democrats running the city, what did they expect. The black or white communists democrats will destroy anything they touch. They do not believe in individuals have the chance to prosper if they apply themselves but it is easier to be on welfare than work at it.

Well, Chris Matthews has explained why manufacturing jobs left Baltimore--because of companies moving to right-to-work states. So it is the fault of those other states.

The taxpayers still have some money left, so obviously they haven't given enough money to fund government programs.

How can we talk about equality when we don’t hold some people equally responsible for their own actions?

Right-that’s because it created a ‘civil rights INDUSTRY’ and employed the otherwise unemployable, at tremendous cost to taxpayers.

Too bad none of this has produced the kind of uplift that was intended.

Many of these otherwise unemployable (sociology majors) turn out to be so corrupt and unprincipled that it's a wonder ANY money and assistance reaches the intended groups.

What is worse, it's seems we hear about these corrupt losers daily yet none ever seem to be charged, imprisoned or even fired.

It's a completely flawed and unworkable culture and most rational people saw THIS outcome at the beginning.

The ‘government’ CANNOT deliver ANYTHING cost effectively or efficiently..... PERIOD.

There is AMPLE evidence for this and there WAS when the ‘Great Society’ BS was implemented!

He knows it won’t work, just like the rest of the powers of the left. It’s not really about rebuilding Baltimore or any positive agenda, it’s about redistributing wealth from the productive to the parasites. That’s the only kind of “equality” they can ever achieve.

Social programs have a vested interest in sustaining themselves, not making their clientele become unneedful of the “program.” We need a renaissance and rebuild in our approach to education, beginning with parents, but I don’t think the wherewithal to apply ourselves is extant with so many conveniences and so much entertainment to feed our lazy hobbits

Totally separate and unrelated problem. True, Baltimore lost manufacturing jobs -- just like all the other Rust Belt cities. And they lost population -- as the mostly white middle class moved west and south to where there were new jobs.

The inner city black population -- a group that was largely unrelated to the manufacturing sector, being mostly jobless in the first place -- was left in charge.

Accordingly, Baltimore is subject to two separate problems:

1. Loss of skilled manufacturing jobs.

2. Unskilled inner city blacks without any economic viability.

WRONG WRONG WRONG!

We are dealing with Satanic forces here and this is intentional.

Problem: Create inner city poverty, welfare dependency, high taxes with unemployment, abortion & homosexuality break up families. Marginalize and control religion (tax status). Militarize and federalize police, introduce professional agent provocateurs, and race baiters (aka community organizers). Dumb down people with tv and put out government news propaganda.

Reaction: Black vs white, “rich” vs poor, police vs public, yes even Dem vs Republican. The idea is that the peasants are too busy fighting to notice or deal with the big problem which is our Luciferian big government that is leading this nation to God’s judgment and Hell. The news media’s job is to lie, divert and confuse.

Solution: Obviously, the solution proposed by the government for these problems are hellish. More surveillance, militarized and federalized police, more destruction of the constitution, abolition of BOR especially 1st, 2nd, 4th amendments. SWAT raids, political prisoners, star chamber trials, missing person. Higher taxes, more regulation. Internet censorship via bureaucrats and secret bills.

We’ve got to start taking a big picture look at these things and use the Bible to help us identify and fight evil.

It’s right in front of our faces. It’s big government globalist oligarch elites. Everything else is a circus.

From the article: “President Obama doesn’t have the slightest idea how to fix Baltimore.”

Wrong. President Obama doesn’t have the slightest intention of fixing Baltimore. He has been race-baiting since he took office. I’ll leave the “why” up to someone else, but he’s been consistent at it. He knows that every race-baiting speech he makes after one of these incidents is going to encourage more such incidents. He wants them to happen. Again, why?

The GOP in this election needs to appeal to the better nature of the black center-city populations, i.e., to the people who turned out to clean up the city after the riots, and to the people whose stores were burned (including their employees who lost their livelihoods), and to the people who formed protective lines in front of the police lines, and yes, to the mother who hauled her son out of the protester’s gang.

It’s now clear that Democrats can’t run squat without messing it up, and that now includes not just cities and states, but the entire country. The GOP candidate that figures out how to make that clear to both blacks and Hispanics has an excellent opportunity to break large segments of both groups out of the Democrat camp.

Our manufacturing base was not 'shipped' to Asia.

What actually happened was government, primarly Federal, but also State, made manufacturing life so difficult that manufacturers here simply faded or folded. Overseas competitors simply replaced them.

Thanks to the alphabet agencies, viz IRS, EPA, EEOC, OSHA...the list is endless and growing.

This is exactly what the voters want...and they have gotten it.
