Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has changed his party's name from Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) to The Republicans.
Members of France's main opposition party voted to support the rebranding on Friday, with 83% of members approving the move.
The move has sparked widespread debate in France, with critics arguing that all French people are Republicans......

"Republican" is a name in France that echoes like "Patriot" would in this country.
Sarkozy appears as if he's trying to create a positive patriotic image for his party in the face of the rise of the National Front.

There have traditionally been 3 parties in France: Communists, Socialists, and Christian Democrats/Gaullists. The latter group has changed names many times.
What is the difference between the Communist & Socialist parties?
Since they share the same evil goal, are the French that stupid to not grasp the reality?
The basic difference between French Communist and French Socialist is that Socialist don’t close churches
Thanks for reply.
Small “difference” as I expect the Socialists would eventually fully embrace their communist brothers.
The Communists were financed by Moscow during the USSR period, although they denied this. The party has declined greatly since the end of the Soviet Union.
How do you say RINO in French ?
Based on my knowledge of French history I would say “Vichy”.
Gerard Depardieu. Oh wait, that’s how you say “rhino” not “RINO”.
Anyway, this is a good move. “Union for a Popular Movement” was one of the worst names ever for a major political party. It used to be “Union for a Presidential Majority”, which was even worse as it would become inaccurate when the party lost the Presidency. They wanted to change it and.....keep the same initials I guess, stupid.
And the term “Republican” is very important to the French. This will probably piss off the socialists.
One of the best names for a major political party, South Korea’s “Grand National Party”, which they sadly changed to “New Frontier Party”, with all English language media using it’s transliterated Korean name, “Saenuri Party”.
BTW, I’d let to get in a “screw the LePen Nazis” before their fans show up.
LOL!
In the movie “Immortal Beloved”, an aristocrat speaks ill of the new musician in town as a “Republican”.
The musician was Beethoven. hahaha!
His calculation is that if his party is Republican(patriot) then the NF is NOT Republican, therefor not patriot. “You don’t want to be not patriotic, do you? Ty[ical leftist shifting of the language to support their deceit.
The communists are serious.

Grand National Party was a pretty awesome name
;-)

It probably sounds better in French. It sounds awkward in English and doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Most French political parties have names that sound weird in English, like "Nature, Mining, Fishing, and Traditions Party", or whatever, etc.
Anyway, good PR move for them, France is really proud of being a Republic so the name probably polls well and is easy to remember.

Why would it tick off any of the official left-wing parties? I don't think any of them are in favor of reverting France back to a monarchy. They might be jealous of the name. Of course there's some freepers who think having a "Republic" magically means you have a nation that "Respects the rights of individuals and upholds the rule of law", so they might be offended that France uses the name and sucks up to Sharia law. Could be worse, some nation like Vietnam could have the Communists change their name to "Republican Party"

Yeah, it’s long, but you know how the Frogs are... they ALWAYS like to embellish..
Those 2 lines are rather pertinent given the Muslim invasion they are facing.
Puis-je suggérer "Merde"?
