Vancouver Water Shortage Prompts Drought-Shaming
The Globe and Mail ^ | Monday, Jul. 27, 2015

If all else fails, there’s always drought shaming.

After the Metro Vancouver area issued Stage 3 water restrictions last week, perturbed residents have turned to social media to publicly shame local water wasters.

It’s the first time the area has imposed the Stage 3 restrictions since 2003, which limits people to watering flowers, vegetables and trees by hand – no sprinklers or hoses.

Reservoirs levels have already dropped to 69 per cent in the region – lows that don’t usually come until August.

Bylaw officers have received neighbour complaints and are issuing written warnings and $250 fines for offenders, but some people still aren’t following the rules.

Hashtags such as #BCdrought and #grassholes have taken hold on social media. A Facebook group called Grassholes was also started, giving people an unofficial place to report residents who aren’t obeying the restrictions.

The City of Vancouver also has an app that allows residents to report people they believe are abusing the restrictions.

How about just charging more for the water?

Drought-shaming is what we municipal authorities do when we cannot figure out how to uphold our responsibility to supply enough water for our population.

The reason we can’t supply enough water is mainly because doing so would cost a lot of money, and these high costs would make it more difficult for us to use taxpayer dollars to continue buying votes from dependent constituencies.

These votes are necessary to keep our asses ensconced in cushy government-paid jobs we don’t really have the skills to perform.

Only a liberal controlled city in a north American rain forest could suffer a water shortage.

Liberals should be caged.

Most water is used by industry and agriculture. Going full Nazi on households is irrational.

A friend of mine up there said that the water shortage was enough to send the local loony neighbor over the edge. After haranguing a neighbor for watering her flowers, which is still allowable a couple of times a week, he came back that night and spray-painted her garage with “Don’t Waste Water!” It didn’t take long for the cops to snag, tag and bag this guy.

Doesn’t it rain there like 362 days a year?

Actually Vancouver, like the rest of the inland waters of the Pacific Northwest, enjoys a modified Mediterranean climate. The climate here is characterized by a cool drizzly winter and warm summer drought. It has been atypically dry here, however - in Seattle we’ve had less than 3 inches of rain since April and less than 1 since May. The long term models don’t show any significant precip for the next 60 days.

Over here on the eastern side of the Cascades we are also experiencing a draught with water-use restrictions. Irrigation district customers in Kennewick, for example, are restricted to watering lawns 30 minutes twice a week. 102-104F temps forecast for the coming weekend and that water isn’t going to amount to much.

The biggest violators are usually the cities themselves.

"How about just charging more for the water?"

Your idea is too rational and logical. Keep it up and you will be headed to a re-eduction camp.

Seriously, yes, just charge more. BTW, did the Fraser River dry up?

I used to live in the Tri-Cities. Now I live in Seattle but I also have a place near Cle Elum, and I just read today that people that have irrigation rights that allow them to draw from the Teanaway and the Cowiche are being cut off. Some of those deeds date back to the 1880s. This is a major drought.
