Putin’s Russia. Do traces of KGB, FSB and GRU lead to Islamic State?

Putin’s Russia. Do traces of KGB, FSB and GRU lead to Islamic State?

Marius Laurinavičius, Rytų Europos studijų centras ir DELFI Friday, January 9, 2015

This time I decided to draw attention to a significant role (which was a surprise for many experts) of Chechen terrorists in a battle of Islamic state that has become a main threat to the West. Based on this role, it is not only possible, but vital to examine the potential links between the Islamic state and Russian secret services.

One of the inspiration sources was the article published in ‘The Huffington Post’ called ‘You Can't Understand ISIS If You Don't Know the History of Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia’. It was written by Alastair Crooke, a famous expert of the Middle East terrorism, a former diplomat and a ranking figure in British intelligence MI-6. That article is definitely worth reading for all of those who want to understand more about the phenomenon and threats of the Islamic state. And I don’t even consider arguing with the famous expert, especially when I, myself, do not aspire a career of terrorism expert. However, after long years of exploring Putin’s current regime and it’s KGB roots, I believe that Crooke’s headline can be rephrased like this: ‘Is it really possible to fully understand the phenomenon of the Islamic state without paying attention to the alleged links between Russian secret services and Chechen terrorists?’

Some things are hard to deny In general, the links between Chechen terrorist and Russian secret services cannot be denied even by those Western experts and commentators who tend to call these links a conspiracy theory. The fact that the famous Shamil Basayev, Ruslan Gelayev and some others Chechen terrorist commanders began their career not only fighting on the Russian side during the Georgian-Abkhaz war, but were directly trained by the special forces of Russian military intelligence (GRU), was basically never even denied in Russia. The traces of GRU agents were not a secret as well. Even Yuri Drozdov, the legend of Russian secret services, former KGB General-Major and a longtime chairman of the board at ‘S’, in his interview for fontanka.ru in 2011 publicly admitted that all this information about Basayev was true.

According to Drozdov, Basayev was ‘one of the leaders of a special military division’. Also undenied is the fact that Basayev’s incursion into Dagestan and house bombing afterwards contributed, to say the least, to Putin’s coming to power. The Western world has less and less doubt that this was all a well-executed, although seemingly unthinkable, operation of Russian secret services. Whether we read Litvinenko's and Felshtisnky’s book ‘FSB blowing up Russia’, David Satter’s ‘Darkness at Dawn: The Rise of the Russian Criminal State’, John Dunlop’s ‘The Moscow Bombings of September 1999: Examinations of Russian Terrorist Attacks at the Onset of Vladimir Putin's Rule’, or the especially popular investigation carried out by Karen Dawisha, professor at the Miami University, called ‘Putin's Kleptocracy: Who Owns Russia?’, it is difficult to deny the tons of odd coincidences and inexplicable actions of Russian government. In the meantime, Putin’s regime closed all doors to any kind of investigations, and many people, who were trying to shed some light on these allegations, were murdered or died under very strange circumstances.

Here's some important information on Russia and Islamic terrorism, including the possibility that Ayman Al-Zawahiri is an agent of the FSB. From a previous post of mine:

From Alexander Litvinenko, FSB defector who was poisoned with Polonium 210 awhile back in London. His poisoner is still at large. The Russians refuse to extradite the only suspect. He talks about international terrorism, including the claim that Al-Qaeda's number 2 (now number 1, with Osama's death) is an agent of the FSB:

A. Litvinenko: The bloodiest terrorists in the world were or are agents of the KGB-FSB. These are well-known, like Carlos Ilyich Ramiros, nicknamed "the Jackal," the late Yassir Arafat, Saddam Hussein, Adjalan (he is condemned in Turkey), Wadi Haddad, the head of the service of external operations of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Hauyi, the head of the communist party of Lebanon, Mr. Papaionnu from the Cyprus, Sean Garland from Ireland and many others. All of them were trained by the KGB, received money from there, weapons and explosives, counterfeit documents and a communication equipment for carrying out of acts of terrorism worldwide.

FAKT: Some may object that each of the listed figures, and the forces supporting them, were engaged in solving their own political problems.

A. Litvinenko: Certainly, all these figures and movements operated under their own slogans; however, none of them especially hid their "intimate" ... relationship with the Kremlin and Lubyanka. There is a simple question: whether the Russian special services would train and finance people and groups that were not supervised by Lubyanka and did not serve the interests of the Kremlin? You understand perfectly, they would not. Each act of terrorism made by these people was carried out as an assignment and under the rigid control of the KGB of the USSR. And [the terrorism] ... is not casual after the disintegration of the USSR and [reform of the KGB]....

FAKT: Every terrorist you have named is from 'the old staff' of the KGB. Could you name someone from recent history?

A. Litvinenko: Certainly, here it is. The number two person in the terrorist organization al Qaeda, who they are crediting with the series of explosions in London, Ayman al-Zawahiri, is an old agent of the FSB. Being sentenced to death in Egypt for terrorism and hunted by Interpol, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in 1998, was in the territory of Dagestan, where for half a year he received special training at one of the educational bases of the FSB. After this training he was transferred to Afghanistan, where he had never been before and where, following the recommendation of his Lubyanka chiefs, he at once ... penetrated the milieu of bin Laden and soon became his assistant in al Qaeda.

FAKT: Could you hint at least, where this data comes from?

A. Litvinenko: I can. During my service in one of the most secret departments of the FSB, top officials from the UFSB of Dagestan, who had directly worked with Ayman al-Zawahiri ... were called to Moscow and received high posts."

From Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, highest ranking defector to ever come over to the west. Confirms Russia's role in world wide Islamic terrorism. Click link to know more:

"My past experience at the top of the Soviet bloc intelligence community gives me solid ground to state that the Muslim attacks on U.S. embassies and the assassination of our ambassador to Libya, carried out with Soviet-made rocket-propelled grenades, Kalashnikovs and Molotov cocktails, were just as “spontaneous” as the May Day parades in Moscow – and that they have the same organizers.

In 1972, I had a breakfast with then-KGB chairman Yury Andropov in Moscow. The Kremlin, he told me, had decided to transform Arab anti-Semitism into an anti-American doctrine for the whole Muslim world. The idea was to portray the United States as a war-mongering, Zionist country financed by Jewish money and run by a rapacious “Council of the Elders of Zion” (the KGB’s derisive epithet for the U.S. Congress) intent on transforming the rest of the world into a Jewish fiefdom. Andropov made the point that one billion adversaries could cause far greater damage than could a mere 150 million. Even Muhammad, he said, had not limited his religion to Arab countries.

“...Ayman Al-Zawahiri is an agent of the FSB.”

Do you really think that?

“In 1972, I had a breakfast with then-KGB chairman Yury Andropov in Moscow. The Kremlin, he told me, had decided to transform Arab anti-Semitism into an anti-American doctrine for the whole Muslim world.”

This one is a howler. As if Muslim anti-Americanism would not have arisen but for the scheming of Yury Andropov.

“If it wasn’t for that damn KGB, the moose limbs would love us, LOVE US.”

If that’s true, (which I doubt) then Yuri screwed up the program, BIG-TIME.

The Soviets primary Middle Eastern goal was always to get access to a Land-supplied Warm Blue-water port, to be in the position to shut down Middle Eastern shipping, and protect Russia’s Southern Flank in the event of war.

They destabilized Iran under the Shah, thinking they could control the radicals once they had there own people in power. That failed spectacularly.

They later tried the same gambit in Afghanistan, with the same results, but this time they tried to fight for control afterward, with disastorous results.

Jump ahead 40 years, and Putin achieves the desired result in the midst of Obama’s complete lack of leadership, signing an agreement with Iran for Russian Naval access to a land-supplied Persian Gulf port (The Iranian Naval Base at Bandar Abbas).

Russia's use of Islamic terrorism in the rise of Vladimir Putin is so powerful evidence-wise that it's a serious question as to whether Russia also had its hands on Al-Qaeda as well. These KGB defectors ought to be considered seriously.

By what standard? Iran is still a Russian ally and receives aid in the form of nuclear technology, material and weapons support, as well as political cover via Russia's role in the UN. Iran's intelligence service is still heavily modeled after the KGB, which was why I did not even trust the "Green Revolution" in Iran when I discovered that its leading bigshot had worked for that aforementioned intelligence service.

If that’s true, (which I doubt)

You're one of Putin's biggest propagandists on this forum, so it's no wonder you'd have your doubts about something.

The Russians weren’t any more popular than Americans in Iran after the fall of the shah. They supported Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war, and kept the Soviet border closed.

It wasn’t until the late 90’s, well after the fall of the Soviet Union, and the removal from power of most of the people involved in supporting Saddam that Russian-Iranian relations began to warm again.

And please, save the trolling...

Quite possible. But would Russia build up large and powerful islamonazi type Arab murder gangs that it then could not possibly control? Especially since Russia is itself threatened by islamonazi terrorism. They might but it sure seems a very risky activity for them.

Assad indeed had a genuine revolution and all of a sudden ISIS pops up, making the revolution illegitimate. Reports are out there that Assad initially propped ISIS and the KGB president agent Obama filled in behind.

The same exact play went on in Chechnya: first a legit separation but all of a sudden extremists pop in.

The Soviets always controled both sides of an uprising by creating agents inviting said uprisings. Every legit Chechen knew at one point to not join in the war because they knew these militias were lead by FSB agents.

The result is that in places like France you have the left accusing the right of being pro-Putin Bichyists and the left accusing the right of being pro-Soviet traitors. It does not get any better than this.

Where are the pro-French French? There are none. Nor is there many pro-American Americans left either.

Russia's infiltration of Chechen "radicals" certainly supports the idea that they would and have done so for a long time! It is not new for Russia. They have been doing it from the very beginning of their history, such as by firebombing their own people during demonstrations just to blame on others; or with false-front organizations that went about recruiting dissidents only to betray them in deepest consequence later. They even published anti-soviet propaganda via these false fronts INSIDE of Russia. From Anatoliy Golitsyn, New Lies for Old, pages 13-15:

"In 1921, as the NEP was being launched, the OGPU created inside Soviet Russia a false anti-Soviet organization, the Monarchist Alliance of Central Russia. It had once been a genuine organization, founded by Czarist generals in Moscow and Leningrad but liquidated by the Soviet security service in 1919-20. Former members of this organization, among them Czarist generals and members of the old aristocracy who had come over to the Soviet side, nominally led the movement. Their new loyalty to the Soviet regime was not in doubt, for they had betrayed their former friends in the anticommunist underground. They were the Czarist generals Brusilov and Zaynchkovskiy; the Czarist military attache in Yugoslavia, General Potapov; and the Czarist transport official Yakushev. The most active agent in the Trust was a former intelligence officer of the General Staff in Czarist Russia whose many names included Opperput. Agents of the Trust traveled abroad and established confidential contact with genuine anticommunist emigre leaders in order (ostensibly) to coordinate activity against the Soviet regime.

Among the important emigres they met were Boris Savinkov and Generals Wrangel and Kutepov. These agents confided in their contacts that the anti-Soviet monarchist movement that they represented was now well established in Soviet Russia, had penetrated into the higher levels of the army, the security service, and even the government, and would in time take power and restore the monarchy. They convinced the emigre leaders that the regime had undergone a radical change. Communism had completely failed; ideology was dead; the present leaders had nothing in common with the fanatical revolutionaries of the past. They were nationalists at heart, and their regime was evolving into a moderate, national regime and might soon collapse. The NEP should be seen as the first important concession on the road to restoring capitalism in Russia. Soon political concessions would follow. Because of this, said the Trust agents, any intervention or gesture of hostility from the European powers or the emigre movements would be ill-advised, if not tragic, since it would only unite the Russian people around their government and so extend its survival. The European governments and the emigre leaders should put a stop to anti-Soviet terrorist activities and change their attitude from hostility toward the Soviet regime to one of passive acceptance. They should grant diplomatic recognition and increase trade. In this way they would have a better opportunity to contribute to the evolutionary process. The emigre leaders should return to Russia to make their contribution. Naturally there were doubters among the emigres, but the prestige of the leaders of the organization particularly, of General Brusilov) convinced the majority. They accepted at face value the Trust's disinformation and passed it on to their influential friends in the European intelligence services. By the time it had been circulated to governments as "secret" intelligence it sounded most impressive, and when as time went on the same story was confirmed by source after source, it became "secret and reliable." The intelligence services of Europe were committed and it was unthinkable that they could all be wrong.

While the Trust was thriving the OGPU took control, wholly or partially, of two other movements calculated to influence the political climate in support of the NEP. They were the "Change of Signposts" movement and the "Eurasian" movement. The first was used by the Soviet security service to mislead emigres and intellectuals in Europe into believing that the strength of communist ideology was on the wane and that the Soviet regime was evolving into a more moderate, national state. The movement published, with unofficial government assistance, a weekly magazine in Prague and Paris, The Change of Signposts, and in Berlin a paper, On the Eve. In 1922, at some risk, the Soviet government allowed two magazines to be published in Leningrad and Moscow, New Russia and Russia. They were intended to exert a similar influence on intellectuals inside the country. By 1926 all publications of the Change of Signposts movement had been wound up, the movement disbanded, and some of its leaders in the Soviet Union arrested. An official Soviet publication partially confirms the exploitation of the movement and describes its end. Shortly afterward, operation Trust was terminated with the arrest of those opponents of the regime who had been unwise enough to reveal themselves as such by associating with the Trust. To impress the Soviet people, trials of members of the opposition— some genuine, some false—were held throughout the country."

When it comes down to it, what do the Russians care if some terrorist blows up a subway in Russia or even bombs an apartment building. The FSB does this already and it doesn't bother them. Compare Golitsyn's writing here with the contents of the OP, and you'll see it's the same old story over and over again.

Answer: No.

Who paid for this article? Wahhabist Saudi Arabia?

I guess people don't want to acknowledge America's Wahhabist allies in the Gulf and in Pakistan were responsible for the rise of the world wide Sunni Muslim jihad and are looking to make stuff up and blame Russia. But the evidence is not there so they have to cover their rear by framing this as a "question". That is what the Ancient Aliens dude does. Did Aliens build the pyramids? I don't know but..........

Litvinenko was a muslim convert and a pro-chechen propagandist. Why people quote him as an authority is a mystery to me.

I just googled Litvinenko. He was buried in a Chechen Muslim funeral service. Probably self medicated in some thwarted terrorist plot with the polonium or it backfired on him?

Too many Islamic Russian agents in Chechnya for it to be an easy "no."

Not all Muslims are made equal, actually. The proof of that is with people like the Kurds, or the Crimean Tatars, or even your average Chechen, not to mention all the various sects and interpretations of Islam. While Islam everywhere is a false religion, it's just not true that every Muslim community everywhere is out to behead people or is molesting little girls or boys. It is true, however, that the most anti-American Muslim groups in the world all tend to have close ties to Russia or else focus all their hatred on the USA and Israel, while benefiting from weapons provided to them by a government in Moscow that used to carpet bomb civilian cities in the Chechen war.

Your apparent ignorance of people like the Kurds-- among whom our soldiers traveled freely without body armour, without weapons, and received much love from-- is the real reason I can't take your cause seriously, whatever it is.
