Argentine soldiers were 'tortured by their own officers' during Falklands War

Argentine soldiers were beaten and tortured by their superior officers during the Falklands War, according to newly released documents.

The documents are the first files released by Argentina's armed forces from the 1982 war against Britian.

They include accounts of mock executions and soldiers being severely beaten for abandoning their posts to search for food.

One soldier describes having his hands and feet bound and being left face down on the beach for eight hours. Another required surgery after being kicked in the testicles by an officer.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

“The beatings will continue until morale improves.”

And you will enjoy this war whether you like it or not!

There are no professional armies in South or Central America. I spent three years (90-93) attempting to train them, it’s all about corruption and pay-offs. I watched officers shoot enlisted soldiers for falling asleep during training. When we were transporting them we would have to stop and collect road kill for them to carry back and cook for dinner.

When Pinochet died Margaret Thatcher hailed him as a great person because a deal had been made whereby Chile put pressure on Argentina, causing them to station their professional troops along the border with Chile. That left Argentina with a large number of raw young recruits in the Falklands who were more than happy to surrender at first opportunity. When the US trained those armies to counter communism, they certainly were in better shape; Britain faced the second string in the Falklands (but came away with a lot of respect for the Argentine pilots).

My first thought when I saw the headlines. Well, it worked for the Soviets. Hell, look at all them Nazis killed and they still wouldn’t quit.

IIRC, the Argentine army in the Falklands was predominantly recent conscripts.

“Well, it worked for the Soviets. Hell, look at all them Nazis killed and they still wouldn’t quit.”

The Soviet abuses against their own people did not work for the Soviets. The Soviet loss ratios were unsustainable.

typical 3rd world army: “aristocratic” officers, with levees of draft soldiers. never works.
