sounds like a dry run to me.....He was real quick to claim all the hoorah was because he was a muslim.....I saw the picture of his stupid little clock more bomb like than clock like no matter what anyone says

I too have built lots of the kits you referenced. I even built some of my own stuff. NEVER once did I think I would take any of them to school to show a teacher....let alone turn them on in English class.
When I saw the box my first thought was dry run....which seems to be what your reaction was too.

Looks like it had a quite large digital display, why wasn’t that activated if it was a simple clock ?
So, the kid should be able to bring a timing circuit to school, give flip answers to investigators with impunity? Will PC prevent investigations? Obama invites him to the White House before all the facts are out?

If it is a clock, why does this kid call it an invention? A little grandiose, don’t you think?
When many kids in middle schools are involved in science competitions where they are building robotics that perform tasks, and compete in competitions, I find it hard to believe that someone would want to take a crappy clock that has to be plugged in to “show” to an engineering teacher...
Based on that alone, I think this was just a way to game a lawsuit, and a big bucks payout.

Digital display is harder to see when it is off...
It's clear to me that the clock was not homemade, and it was not a kit. You can see the display connected to the main board via a ribbon cable, a 9 volt connector for a backup battery, a secondary board that houses the various pushbutton controls for time setting, alarm time setting, etc., and the AC transformer for primary power.
He took the guts out of an existing clock and crudely repackaged it. Not very impressive work of you ask me.
