Congressman McClintock Today Announced His Resignation from the House Freedom Caucus
Tom McClintock ^ | 10/22/2015 | Tom McClintock

Dear Jim:

When the House Freedom Caucus formed in January, I fervently hoped that it would provide responsible and effective leadership to advance conservative principles in the House of Representatives.

I know that every member of the HFC sincerely supports these principles, but as I have expressed on many occasions during our meetings, I believe the tactics the HFC has employed have repeatedly undermined the House’s ability to advance them. Allow me to review a few examples.

On February 27th, we faced the imminent shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security over the funding of Obama’s unlawful amnesty orders for illegal immigrants. Although the American people overwhelmingly opposed these orders, they also overwhelmingly opposed shutting down DHS. House Republicans attempted to pass a three-week stop gap bill so we could avoid a catastrophic shutdown of our security agencies while continuing to bring public opinion to bear to de-fund the orders. At the behest of its board, most HFC members combined with House Democrats to defeat this effort, resulting in the full funding of these illegal orders for the fiscal year.

In May, the House had the opportunity to adopt the most important free trade bill in nearly two decades, restoring the long-standing and essential process that has made it possible for our nation to negotiate free trade agreements with other nations. At the behest of its board, most HFC members combined with the vast majority of House Democrats in an unsuccessful attempt to defeat this legislation.

Last week, the House was scheduled to adopt the Resolution of Disapproval of the disastrous Iran nuclear agreement – the only legally binding action available to Congress under the Corker Act. Once again, the House Freedom Caucus leadership threatened to combine with House Democrats to defeat the Resolution, forcing the House leadership to abandon it in favor of a symbolic and legally meaningless vote. Ironically, while Harry Reid and Senate Democrats blocked a vote on the Resolution of Disapproval in the Senate, the House Freedom Caucus leadership was instrumental in blocking its consideration in the House.

A front group. Glad he resigned and is publicly stating why.

We will see if any real conservatives follow his lead. Separate the truth tellers from the liars.

I suspect there are probably only a handful of real conservatives in this group.

Anyone who by now cannot tell that both the Republican Party and Democrat Party are working together to promote and accomplish Obama’s agenda are totally blind. Obama’s agenda? Straight from the horse's mouth: If elected, I will fundamentally transform the United States of America. Or words to that effect.

Y'see, the GOPe squishes, phonies & liars have been at it a long time.

I have voted for Tom many times when he was in State Govt.

He’s the real deal.

I hope Ted Cruz includes him in his administration.

The House Resolution on the Iranian agreement was a meaningless vote too. No teeth.

I’m not sure the McClintock is as conservative as he is supposed to be.

If you don’t stand up for principles and fight for them, then resign.

Almost every congress critter can talk a good game when they need to and many of the new ones go to congress fired up and wanting to govern like they campaigned.

Sadly, almost every congress critter quickly becomes addicted to the D.C. game. Those who give money win. The people who elected them lose. Outside of a few social issues we pretty much have the uniparty now. The current GOP leadership campaigned on opposing the President and even reversing some of the damage. They have done nothing. Oversight? A complete joke.

We are in really bad shape and I have a very hard time believing we can make any kind of change. It us undeniable that the Tea Party Caucus we sent to Congress has not slowed spending one bit.

I have read this forum for many more years than I have posted. It’s groundhog day. We listen to what they say and get excited and cheer. They (collectively) do the opposite every time. I don’t even know why conservatives get excited about any of it. We cheered Issa - what a joke. We support them and they accomplish nothing. We are like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football while Lucy holds it.

Beware of any “conservative” group that uses words like “liberty”, “freedom”, “patriots” or “tea party” in their name.

Too many times it’s just for show and collecting donations.

McClintock is another one of the blowhards. Talks conservative talk, then runs for the door the minute conservatives try to _actually_ do anything about it.

Another whiner who loves to whine, but is terrified of shutting down DHS. Glad he smoked himself out.
