Why the NY Times attacked Conservative PACs like ours.

The New York Times has a Front Page hit piece out on me (Larry Ward) and my PACs.

Here's what the story didn't say after four very long interviews with me...As you read this ask yourself, why are Conservative PACs the only ones ever attacked like this???

Most importantly - PAC activity is judged by the media and the Establishment by how much money is gives to candidates. I rarely give to candidates because I prefer to spend our resources fighting OUTSIDE not INSIDE Congress. I'd prefer to work with the grassroots and not institutional roots. Our issue campaign dollars are spent with ad agencies, consultants and vendors on the FEC Report but show up as "admin expenses" and spun to look like we are pocketing "profits" of our fundraising when in fact we are spending money to advance our conservative issues. (Which by the way - candidates and political parties spend their money with the same ad agencies, consultants and vendors for their electoral campaigns for the same reason.)

PAC stands for Political Action Committee - NOT Election Action Committee. We choose not to use our PACs as a bank account for candidates and incumbents.

Every message we send carries an donation request, REQUEST! We ask folks who agree with the work we are doing to help out. Most of the work we do [like FirePaulRyan - which raised $120.00 total ] doesn't break even...meaning the expenses outweigh the fundraising which means the rest comes out of my pocket. That is never reported in these "Scam PAC" stories.

Attaching a fundraising ask is the most common technique used by both parties, PACs, all candidates and non profits...though it is only reported negatively when CONSERVATIVES do it. Have you ever received an email from President Obama where he didn't ask you for $3.00? How many exposes do you see accusing Obama's Organizing for Action of scamming donors? Does anyone accuse the New York Times or Washington Post of publishing stories to try to scam you into a subscription or to use your click for ad revenue? The argument is vapid at best. People are free and intelligent enough to donate to causes they believe in. They do so freely and in our case with a complete understanding of what they are giving to and where the money is going.

I fight these battles because I believe in them, not to make a fast buck. I am really good at what I do professionally and could (and did before) earn a much better living on Madison Ave, NY than First Street, DC. I am in this business to help the country, period.

Twelve years ago I drove to Washington D.C. in my dream car, a black E Class Mercedes with a kick ass stereo system and a spoiler...I now drive a 2007 Toyota Camry with 110,000 miles and duck tape on the fender. True story. I drive proudly because after I provide for my family I give every thing I have back to the cause.

All of this I told to the NY Times Eric Lipton, but somehow it didn't make it into the article.
