The intelligent idea was to take sufficient space to build a major military complex in Iraq and a military seaport in Basra, then take the oil, all of it, to finance long term our base and operations. Even the Iraqis would have respected us much more had we done that and all of this crap that is ripping up the whole ME and back through Central Asia would not be happening.

Well you may have a point, but I am very bothered by America’s arming of “moderate muslims” to this or that or whatever ever it is that our goal is.

I don’t want our nose in this business at all. I do not want us in bed with islamists. It makes us look like bad guys.

To weep for the fallen and wounded is only natural. One is too many, and the sorrow lingers. The goal is to see that not one United States fighting man, or woman, dies in vain.

Not one US Armed Forces Personnel sent into harm's way when our national interest is not at risk. And then if so, the ROI should be to take them out, period.

Let generals fight, not used car salesmen, or community organizers.

Fight to protect the Unites states, not to create and establish governments on the other side of the planet.

Okay, I am ranting, will stop now.

I agree with him. The chaos that resulted from the ouster of both men has created far more misery and destruction, and has created the instability that we see today in the Middle East and North Africa.

They deserved to die, sure, but what are they replaced with? During the cold war, we supported all kinds of evil tin pot dictators (Saddam included)because the alternatives were severely damaging to global stability. There is no “good” in the middle east, just sh*tty and sh*ttier...

The dumbest idea was to go to Iraq and overthrow Saddam

It was no less dumb than to attack Iraq following its Kuwait invasion. Why did Bush the 1st and the press think we had a moral obligation to return a kingdom to autocratic absolute monarchists? His presumed next conquest, Saudi Arabia, would have done the World a favor.

Agreed. What was so great about Kuwait? And they were caught red-handed side-drilling into Iraqi oil fields.

“Saddam had to go. He was a major player in supporting anti-American and anti-Israel terrorist groups. He is the one who paid Palestinian mothers $10,000 for each child who became a suicide bomber - Iraq was a safe haven for terrorists of any stripe.”

Yes, well documented he assisted Al Queda as well.

With flame suit on, Trump is an idiot. Go Ted.

Whether Trump likes it or not, Saddam most probably would have been gone by now anyway - Iran had lost to Iraq in two previous wars when we helped Saddam, but we were not about to come to his aid after Kuwait - he sat atop a shaky Sunni regime in a majority Shia country only by murdering thousands of his own people every year, and after the Kuwait misadventure his army was pretty much in tatters - Saddam would have been gone, and Shiite Iran would have reunited with their brethren in Iraq and taken over the five hundred tons of yellow cake he had collected for his WMD development....

Brutal dictators generate radical Islamists and retard development of democratic processes. There is no practical difference between them and the Islamofascist states which once ruled the Balkans, Sicily Iberia and southern Russia. Those areas STILL suffer from the result of that kind of government. I Support Trump for President but he should be getting foreign policy advice from Bolton, not Rand Paul.

After 911 and at that time, there was a lot of understandable paranoia but good for Trump and Buchanan if they didn’t fall for it.

Saddam was convicted of genocide of the Kurds, I don’t know if it was ongoing at the time but that is sort of something we helped stopped, estimates of those he genocided go from 20,000 up. There was some comparatively light persecution of Christians.

Still, it was flubbed up indeed.

100% agreed. F these anti war pussies. We sacrifice American lives and these iraqi ingrates give us nothing?? Just take it and stop apologizing. If I were Bush I would have said “ yeah, we’re taking 30 oil fields, and the proceeds will finance our operations and provide for the lives for the families of American soldiers lost in the war”

I'm not privy to Bush's thoughts or the thoughts of Germany's and Japan's leaders, who fully funded Desert Storm, along with the Saudis and Kuwaitis. However, I suspect it had little to do with morality and everything to do with history. Muhammad started out as the leader of a band of robbers. By the time his generals of the Rashidun caliphate were done 50 years later, a good chunk of the Byzantine and Sassanid (Persian) empires were under Muslim rule. The principal reason for removing Saddam from Kuwait was to prevent him from going on to unify the oil resources of the Middle East under his rule, which would have given him the ability to dictate (very high) prices to the world.

Apart from oil, it was to our advantage that 400 million Muslims weren't unified under a single ruler. It was the same logic that guided our decision, on the eve of our entry into WWII, to support China against Japanese invasion, despite the fact that the Communists were allied with the Soviets and the Nationalists had allied with both the Soviets and the Nazis. It made little sense for us to stand by as the Japanese empire prepared to add to its ranks 400m new subjects who, in time, might become every bit as fanatical in their devotion to the goals of the Japanese empire as their conquerors. The Koreans and the Taiwanese who fought in Hirohito's service were certainly indistinguishable from the Japanese in their devotion to the cause of the Rising Sun - Japan's rule over Taiwan and Korea since the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895 had been largely beneficial to the populace, and the native draftees reciprocated by serving loyally in the Imperial Japanese forces.

Oil was a real concern with Desert Storm, turning the valves off, we were not as self-sufficient, could have been.

And Kuwait was at one time, part of Iraq someone was telling me. Maybe.

Iraq had woman doctors I’ve heard, destroy one Saddam and a thousand Bin Ladens spring up.

No, to make it work, a continuing presence was needed to keep the lid on.
