SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Puerto Rico's governor signed an executive order Friday banning the use of plastic bags across the U.S. territory, defying legislators who just days ago rejected a similar bill.
The ban will take effect in mid-2016 and will be preceded by a six-month educational campaign, Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla said.

Since rum is not sold in plastic bags I’m totally indifferent to the Governor’s act.
It’s nice these people know the right priorities.
So, cash bribes will still be in paper bags/envelopes?
PR economy can’t find its way out of a paper bag, so they ban plastic bags. Makes sense...
In West Texas, they appear to be the “cash crop” of every urban open lot.
They “bloom” in winter when the North winds start blowing.
Thank God! Plastic bags are a bigger threat than ISIS, Iran, China, Russia, and Korea.
I actually liked it better when we used paper bags especially ones with handles. However, stupid idiots thought plastic was better only to find out they weren’t. Oh well. These cloth bags are horrible. I have been saving plastic bags for about six months now in case the inevitable happens.
Puerto Rico is what happens when you give a perfectly good island to Mexico
They are bankrupt and are worried about plastic bags?
Crime is rampant and they’re worried about plastic bags?
The stupidity never ends.
They are bankrupt but they did the most important thing and banned plastic bags.
Another Liberal idea that looked so good on paper is coming to an end, because it turned out to be such a disaster.
LOL, paper envelopes for bribes, I don’t know about illegal drugs.
A six month educational program?
How hard is it to learn:
Plastic bags are evil. Do not use them.
Of course, consumers might get a clue in mid-2016 when they purchase items and are told that checkers cannot put items in plastic bags any more.
Indeed. The United States is bankrupt. Maybe we can get the United States to ban carcinogenic toast...yes, yes, that ought to do it.
It's hard to belive a reporter could even report tha plastic bag ban without dripping sarcasm. I s'pect it was a straight up story.
What will they put in their shoes during the rainy season ?
Require reusable cloth bags, and collect taxes on their sale. Then when the cloth bag gets contaminated by a leaking package of meat, discard it and buy another upon which taxes can be imposed.
Seems like 1930s-style dictators are making a comeback. Good thing we have more lampposts.
