A senior Chinese military official toured a Chinese warship docked in Djibouti during the weekend and met with the country's president, according to China's defense ministry, underscoring Beijing's efforts to expand its military operations in Africa.

Djibouti, an East African country located near vital shipping lanes and terrorism hotspots in Yemen and Somalia, also hosts military bases for the United States and France.

Some security analysts have raised concerns that China, which is reported to be in talks about constructing a base in Djibouti, could be seeking to exert more influence in the strategic country, a move that could disrupt U.S. counterterrorism operations. ...

I have read the same article since the early 70’s. It amazes me that each time the author thinks they have stumbled onto a fact that is earth shattering. The Chinese have been using the same strategy in Africa since Mao was on the green side of the grass.

How many bases did they build there when Mao was around?

I’m aware of Red China supporting the ANC and ZANU-PF among other communist regimes, but they didn’t have the kind of military back then that they do now.

China has been providing infrastructure, construction projects, in Africa in exchange for influence for decades. They were highly influential with the dictators like Nyerere in Tanzania, Barre in Somalia back in the 70’s. Remember the term “Scientific Socialism” that was common back then, usually used by rulers who were close to the Chinese. Even our guy in Angola, Savimbi, started his guerilla career as China’s guy. Mozambique was another client of China back then, that is why ZANU-PF was based there. The other guy, Moscow’s man Nkomo, was based out of Zambia.

I think that they should have another go at Somalia.

Of course it would take a substantial ground force to take control of the country away from the war lords. But China certainly has adequate forces to tackle the job.

All China needs is a triggering event to provide Cassus Belli and for that they need only start sending freighters past the Somali coast.

China can then let loose the dogs of propaganda to expound that Somalia is a nest of pirates that must be cleaned out to safe guard Free Trade.

Somalia then can be a testing ground for Chinese military tactics and arms.

Of course the Somali pirates may be too smart to take a Chinese freighter but I imagine the Chinese are smart enough use a foreign freighter to carry their goods and then simply claim the right to recover their goods by military means.

I am much more concerned about the national security implications of the US outsourcing much of its industrial base to China over the past 25 years than I am about anything China is doing in Africa today.

The Chinese may read “Heart of Darkness” and decide that working with African people is futile.

And then decide to move their own people in, and displace the Africans.
